I am wondering about my temps. I am ready to start trying some overclocking on the CPU.

The picture below is after 30 mins setting idle on the desktop, default BIOS options (nothing, save GPU, overclocked currently).



When I installed the Noctua cooler, I followed the directions that came with the thermal compound, placed a dot of it dead center on the cpu, set the cooler (I then took it off and look at it, there was a circle of compound covering the majority of the CPU, looked just like the picture in the instructions)

I have no way of measuring the current room ambient temps, but it's not overly hot (the furnace isn't on)

Do you think I should reseat the cooler or do a complete covering of the thermal compound or are these temps about where they should be and I can start to OC?
 
your room temp is probably in the 20's (celcius) so idle temps should be where they are (only a few degrees over ambient). idle numbers are somewhat useless, other then to indicate when something is wayyy out of whack like when you only clip 3 of 4 pins on the heatsink or something.

notice in coretemp it says (133x 12.0) - your CPUs are doing nothing so it drops the multipler way down to 12x to conserve power. if you loaded up prime95, i could tell you if your HSF was seated or not, but idle doesnt mean much of anything.

Staying under 60c for stock is fine. You can get it colder if you want but for stock speeds there is no point really as long as you are happy with the noise (assuming you have any)
 
I am idling at around 45-50 on my i7-920 @3.8ghz (200x19 @ 1.24V) which I feel might be a little high. I am using a scythe mugen 2 cooler in an antec p182 case with the fans on high and the ambient temp is a tad under 20c. After running Prime it peaks around 68 which I am happy about. Is 45-50 too high at idle and do I risk damaging anything? I might try to lower the voltage a little and see if that gets me anywhere.

Nothing will be damaged. As long as the load temps are managed you are fine. Just do not expect to get much beyond 4 GHz on air as it is just not doable with that limited cooling.
 
Thanks scook, yea im more than happy with 3.8ghz coming from 2.66. The funny thing is I went down to 3.2 a while back and idle temps weren't much lower, low to mid 40's. I guess ambient was probably a few degrees higher though.
 
If you did not lower the voltage, I would not expect the temps to be any lower

What is odd (perhaps I missed a BIOS setting?) is that after I closed Prime, my idle Core Voltage actually went higher, to 1.22v
 
My 950 temps are very similar to yours in that my cores are like:
1) Hottest 2) Cool 3) Hot 4) Coolest

I initially used the small dot of thermal paste and then squishing it with the cooler but I went to the spread method by putting the dot in the center and spreading with a business card and got mine to run a few C's cooler.

If I let it idle (at 4.00GHz w/1.255V no power saving) it'll sit in the low-30's (with #4 hitting high-20's) with the room temp at 20C/68F; Scythe Yasya cooler. It does about 10C hotter during full-load, though, likely because of the overclock; I never loaded it when it was stock speed but I might have to play with it and see.

when you put a load on the CPU, the voltage drops. remove the load and the vregs dont need to work as hard to keep up. the idea is to minimize this voltage swing as much as possible, but it is dependant on many factors such as quality of power going into the power supply and into the motherboard, quality of the voltage regulation circuit, etc.

One thing I have noticed is when my RAM hits 1600MHz (it's rated speed) a bunch of LED lights come on on the X58A-UD3R (according to the manual they are the CPU Voltage LEDs), though, according to various programs the voltage on the CPU is fine.

djoye, you have the same mobo (if it's Rev 2.0), do you get the onboard LEDs lighting up all the time?
 
What was the bsod code? different ones indicate what voltages you need to change usually
 
I honestly do not remember where :( Google should be able to help you. I just click show details on the popup after windows reboots from a bsod

I do have a Rev2.0 board, not sure on the LEDs since the window is facing away.
 
Ya HT really drives up temps. When I had my 920 (C0) being cooled by a TRUE it would make a 20c difference at 4 GHz
