Are my temps okay?

I recently built a new computer because my old one practically died. It was running way to hot, so hot that the Video card and CPU were fried.

So now with my new setup I am paranoid of it happening again.

Ati X850 XT with ati silencer
- 42/43 idle
- 58-62 load (this is with using atitool to boost fanspeed to 100 percent

Amd 3800+ xt with stock
- 42/43 idle
- 55-57 load (this might actually go higher)

I'm thinking about reapplying artic silver to the cpu heatsink because what I've read on these boards is that my idle is high.

I'm also thinking about getting some better fans. Would better fans lower my cpu/video card temps?

Check your Vcore which in my experiance always can be decreased to a point which will be perfect for it, also use prime when checking its stabilaty.

Is that 3800+ an X2? If so, then the stock cooler is BARELY sufficient imo. The cpu temps look pretty high.

I agree. A 3800 X2 should have lower temps. Try using an aftermarket HSF, it will be a big improvement over the stock HS that AMD provides.

Your GPU is fine, however :).

What's your case airflow like? Can we get some inside pics?

Okay thanks for the replies. Yes it is a X2.

I'll look into getting a new heatsink/fan. My room temperature is just a little warm, but not that bad (sorry I don't have an actual number).

Its good to know that my video card temps are okay. I was worried that I might have installed the silencer wrong.

edit: added picture - 120mm fan for outtake, 80mm fan for intake. My intake fan doesn't seem to be pushing much air and I can't seem to speed it up any more. (sorry for crap picture, only have a camera phone)

Those cards (GPU that is) can tollerate Load temps of almost 100'c Before they blow. My 7800 can take 125'c (yeah, egg-cooking temp to say the least) before it starts to auto-throttle (that's INSANE).

You can probably keep your fan speed at 70% rather than 100% to save yourself a few db... I know I would.

But your CPU temp is WAY too high still. Might I recommend reseating your HSF? How much Arctic silver are you using (or other paste)? You're idling at what some people load at.

Anyways, for some free mods... You know the "pre-stamped" fan grills that are drilled into your case? Did you know they block almost 50% of most fan's effectivenesses, and add to the noise level to boot. Get rid of them! Dremel or Tin-snip them out and your temps will most certainly decrease.

I'm going to reseat the hsf tonight and redo the artic silver. I put about a rice size amount like the instructions say. However, the latch for the hsf was a lot harder to attach than all of my other cpus. I had to use a lot more strength on it then I felt comfortable. I'm talking about the metal things on both sides that push down over the plastic on the motherboard. Every other cpu I've had they slid right on without to much effort.

Also I'll probably dremel the grills out, tonight. Thanks for the tip :).

Lol... Yeah... Those sockets these days need "Oh-Shit-I'm-Going-To-Break-It" strength. I had to crack a beer to get my first stock HSF on my X2 build lol...

Yeah, the grills on your case are some of the worst ones I've seen :D. I just have a big open hole at the back of my case (I trimmed it with C moulding from Frozen-CPU.com to make it pretty) and slapped on a 120mm wire grill. Those restrict less than 1% of your airflow.

The intakes are especially weak to stock-grillage. Their ability to pull in air is severely limited by the front air intake of your case (ususally a little vent about 2" x 1" total) and they're hit hard AGAIN by the factory stamp. I really dont know what Manufacturers are thinking these days :S.

On top of that... If you re-arrange your wires, try to keep them AS NEAT as possible, you might notice a few 'c on your Load Temp (your Memory will be more stable, as lots of your cables are hanging over your RAM = higher temperatures and possibly electrical interfereance).

Um what else... It seems that there's a couple of spaces between your Hard Drives. That's good as it'll allow air to hit them, yet still flow between.

As for right now (after you Dremel out your grills of course) I'd take your side panel off. If your temps lower alot, you know it's your current case condition that's causing your higher temperatures. IF, however, they only lower a few 'c, then you know it's your HSF.

damn, I OC'd my 3800 X2 from 2Ghz to 2.55Ghz on air, and I dont even see load temps that high!!! Invest in some AS5 and a good cooler and fan. I idle at 37C and get to 50C under load (games etc...)

I redid the artic silver and my load temps dropped to 55 and idle dropped to 40.

Then I noticed that my case fan were running really slow. So I checked the power. I'm using a Truepower powersupply, and it has a special cord for "fans only" apparently this cord can't power shit. I hooked up my fans to a regular cord and bam my fans were going strong and my temps dropped. Now the cpu is at 38 idle, 50 load.

I'm going to use some of the tips in here to improve on this, I want to get my idle down a little lower. Tomorrow (didn't have a chance tonight) i'll remove the grills on the fans. Also I'll improve my cable management.

Thanks guys!

You'll probably get to 36'c with the Cable management and grill drilling...

Still a bit too high. Can you check your Vcore in CPUz? Maybe your board is overvolting it...
