got an 80gig today b/c my WD funked out on me (ended up fixing it). i had been planning on having two harddrives anyways, with the smaller one being the C. but i don't know, this thing is loud. no deathclicks, but just general accessing loud! i googled and found some forums talking about an AMSET program but i cant' seem to find it anywhere.

also, i have 1 80 gig and 1 250 gig drive, how should i set em up? ideally it'd be the 80 as C and 250 as D. but if it's always going to be this loud... maybe i'll just return it.

Very odd
the 4 or 5 maxtor 200gb ($69 specials) i have sitting around are all uber quiet

i'm suprised the 250 is that loud

Definetly just your 80 gig. I have 2 x 160 gig DiamondMax 10s and they are soooooooooo quiet compared to my last WD drives. Its like night and day. As long as the drive isnt fragmented to crap, or I havent got all my fans turned down/off, I cant hear em.

HUH??? WHAT?!?!? I CAN'T HEAR YOU OVER MY VANTEC TORNADO!!! The Maxtors??? It's Been Quiet So Far...
/deaf from Vantec Tornado :D

well, my 200gb has some loud seeks, but other than that it is dead quiet. if you would like AMSET give me a sec and ill find it for ya. if it is an SATA drive it wont work, it only works with PATA controllers at this point

if it is whining, there aint nothing you can do. my older maxtors (and WD, and seagate) just lack FDB motors and there is nothing you can do about it

AMSET is supposed to help with seeks, but i have a sata drive and it wont work. it does degrade performance however, as it does slow down seeks

as far as which one should be the master/slave, what are the retational speeds and cache of both? if the 250 is a bit older its gonna be a 5400rpm, and if the 80 is newer im guessing its a diamondmax9 w/8mb? right now i just have the 200g partitioned out as it plenty of space for me.. although it is getting used up...:(

edit: AMSET

they're both the same specs, 7200rpms 8mb caches etc. but the 250 is quieter and i'm still mildly wary about basing everything on it at the moment, that's my only hiccup as far as putting faith into it.

if its any consolation, ive never had a maxtor drive die on me, and when one got started failing all it needed was a zero fill to be perfect again. ive been using my diamondmax9 200gb drive for everything for the past year and a half with absoultly no problems; and if you are real worried about it, just get a dvd-rw and back everything up, theyre only like 60 bucks now

edit: as long as you keep a fan on it and keep it cool it should last a very long time.
