Are Intel CPUs better than AMD?

I know this is a loaded question however, I still would like to hear some opinions.

I haven't owned a Intel CPU since a P3 800.

All my CPUs since then have been AMD.

My current CPU is a Athlon 2100+ running at 2.3 Ghz (200 x 11.5).

I mainly do gaming.

I've been looking at getting an Athlon 64, however, I've totally ignored Intel and I'm not at all sure how Intel performs when compared to AMD's offering.

Price is a factor for me, I'm not spending more than $400 for a CPU - no way.

Given my budget, will AMD or Intel provide me with better performance (for my application) for the same price.

Other factors:
I will not buy RDRAM - no f way.
I'm also not buying registered ram either - forget that as well.

Thanks for helping.

P.S.

Here are my complete specs:

* Athlon 2100+ @ 2.3 Ghz (200 x 11.5)
* Epox 8RDA+ Rev 1.0
* 1 Gig of PC2700
* BBA X800 Pro @ 540/540 :D

as long as you are a gamer then go for amd, post at amd forum about your budget and plan and you will get the best setup you can afford

I say grab a P4 3.0C and Abit IC7. You can stay with the RAM you have and you might even try relaxing the timings to get a 1:1 CPU/FSB ratio of 200Mhz.:)

Both processors will do you good, but heres how you choose what to do.

Intel does bandwidth very nicely, so big stuff like 3d Design and vid editing
AMD does number Crunchers, like Equations and Games

Yes, a P4 beats a K5 in all it's 166MHz glory, if that's what you want to know. Other than that, it would help if you would provide two CPU's that you want to decide between, or name a task that you want to do.

If you want to talk about DOA rates and manufacturing yields plus the fact that Intel CPU's are also harder to fry I would say the answer is yes. They are better in terms of manufacturing. I would also bet that Intel CPU's would last longer than an AMD before failing.

But by the time either failed you wouldn't be using it anymore. So it doesn't matter.

Quality wise I would say that maybe they might be better in some respects. With that being said that difference is negligable in the real world. Your application should really dictate the choice of what platform to use.

For a gaming box AMD is the way to go. With Prescott's lackluster performance and Intel's stupid LGA775 design, I have been considering AMD for my next machine. As I have a need for another PC.

For video editing and things of that nature the Intel platform is the way to go.

More or less boils down to the following:
Encoding video-Intel.
Anything else-AMD.

you are one of the most un-biased people i've seen on these boards!

Intels are better for gaming...if you're on a laptop! AMD pretty much blows Intel away for gaming, but if you're doing video encoding and stuff intel is better.

oh and Intel hasn't used RDRAM in like 2 years

you said you mainly do gaming then dont even look at a p4 unless you do alot of rendering, and use threaded apps if not 64bit amd all the way. 3000+ and a nf3250gb board and your set

IMHO
wait for the new motherboards to come out aka, LGA, 939 socket... they are supposed to be enriched with new little goodies....

but if you cant wait...

get either the a64 2800+ and a good 754 socket board or

A P4 2.4C and OC it to 3.3 or 3.4 with a thermalright HS and a duct -- make sure you get a good springdale board... i hear the DFI boards are good.

Or, you could get a DFI Infinity and a AXP 2600 Mobile and bring it up to 2.5 - 2.6ghz

As fast as these new 939s seem to be (at least for me) I don't feel there's even much of a difference in video encoding between the AMD and Intel systems. Benchmarks may show differences, but in real world use, the difference is negligable. Games and everything else though, the AMD really screams.
