Are HP pavilion computers ATX?

Hey guys,

A friend of mine wants me to move his HP Pavilion a6150y into an antec 900. Is the hardware inside the HP Pavilions ATX so it will be able to move into the 900 no problem? Also, can I upgrade the PSU to an ATX psu? Or does hp use some propriety standard?

Yes it is mATX case and that will fit into any ATX case such as Antec 1200. Personally I like the Antec 300 more for its much smaller size and great cooling.
 
Thanks for your reply! Does anybody know if the headers for power/reset/ leds are prorietary though? Or will the standard ones from an antec case work?
 
I'm almost positive they're standard. A lot of HP computers (if not all...) use ASUS boards from what I have seen upgrading rigs at work (new RAM, video cards, etc).

But yeah almost all retail PCs use Micro ATX motherboards (you can tell because of the 4 slots) although some Dells (maybe some HPs, I'm not sure but I haven't seen any) have the motherboard on the opposite side of the case, with the expansion slots swapped around. The Dell Dimension e520 for example.
 
ACTUALLY NO they are NOT ATX anymore. They have switched to BTX for most of their cases. Here is an easy way to tell: Look at the computer from the front. If the panel on the right side opens then it is BTX, if it opens from the left it is ATX.
 
Sigh... Just cause it opens on the other side doesn't make it BTX, Just upside down ATX. Sigh...

BTX is quite different than inverted ATX. BTX is a form factor that has for the most part, been abandoned.
 
All HP Pavilion computers are standardized mATX, with no non-standard plugs/headers/whatever.

Feel free to move around as much as you like.
 
mATX Everything in them is pretty standard now. I swapped a Seasonic power supply into mine. No problems. I'll probably look for a HTPC case to stick it in once I do a build.

Must have just started doing it then.

I work at a computer repair shop, most of the computers we get are 2-5 years old... occasionally we get fairly new computers but most people go through warranty repairs and only use us to backup data.

I believe that Dell released perhaps 2-3 BTX-based models before they discontinued it. For other OEMs it was much the same. BTX is dead, especially now that Intel has abandoned it.
 
Heh, had no idea... I honestly only deal with older OEMs.. I just replaced my brothers gateway motherboard (which was BTX) and the case... with a M-ATX Asus and a Antec 300...

Then we had a lady come in with an XPS 700 with a bad motherboard, couldn't find any replacements so we used a 790 SLI board and an Antec 300.. (Her original chipset was a 590sli)

And a lot of the Dells I've been opening up lately have been those BTX boards, Dimension 9100 and XPS 400 I think were the models...

Oh well... :)

However, future development of BTX retail products by Intel was canceled in September 2006. A proprietary form factor is now used by many companies.[1]

So what you may see as 'BTX' systems are most likely the proprietary remainders of the BTX format :) As (u)ATX boards require less re-tooling of production lines as outside OEMs virtually no one uses BTX, OEMs will find that just using ATX is much cheaper, as they can use off-the-shelf parts :)

i disagree, most of the hp and dell business desktops/towers are BTX cases... ex optiplex 755 etc

Apparently they think it's still worth it, then. However, since there is no 'BTX standard' anymore, the mainboards in those systems are best referred to as purely proprietary designs, much like virtually any OEM years ago refused to use AT/ATX and instead used their own design.
