Are high weight coolers a problem?

I chose to buy a scythe ninja over the Big typhoon like i was thinking about originally. Will the 665gram + a fan (around 200g) do anything funny to my mobo etc? In other words is ~850grams too much weight?

Also can someone please describe to me what they mean by this?

"I should mention the Aerocool Turbine 3000 fans have a double set of blades for a total of 16 blades per fan which makes them ideal for this type of heatsink."

Excessive weight is bad when you're moving the computer around a lot.

yes if ur compy is just sitting there forever than its fine..

but if u the go to lanparty alot then its best to get a lightweight cooler to avoid the hasssle and paranoia

my comp moves like once a year in a car that's about it

So what do you guys think about Scythe Ninja + Panaflo L1A .... better performance than Big typhoon? I'm so stuck on this decision.... no one can give me an answer as to which would perform better :)

How about both rear and top fans set to low-speed exhaust? With the top fan being an intake, you're possibly recycling the hot air.

Nah i've actually tested this on a friends comp.... his cpu temps went down a lot... (3-5 degrees) when he flipped it over

ding ding ding ding....winnar!

Seriously, heavy coolers are no problems if the plane of gravity vs. the computer is oriented properly... :p

Pretty close probably...surely close enough that you aren't going to get a bigger overclock using one or the other....

Noise is another issue....

Just don't enter your computer in a wet t-shirt contest and it should be fine. ;)

Which would be the best noise/performance?

unless of course its that way normally

(rackmounts rule :p :p :p ) jk

as far as the fan blades go, Id assume he mean that because the number of blades have increased the relative degree of arc they have is less than a fan with fewer blades, and since the blades are not as "wide" the angle of attack can be greater

well, although i know that my opinions are usually disregarded as being over-cautious.

my old SLK 947 put one hell of a permanent warp in my old A7N8X mobo, and that computer didn't travel.

i think that using a cooler like the XP-90 and a nice fan like the panaflo H1A-BX 92 mm with suitable software control is the best thing going.

too bad that NMB has bought panasonic out.......who knows where quality will go from here on in?

How long did it take for that warp to appear? and did it do anything bad?

it took about 1.5 year to get that warp, at the point that i took the machine apart and noticed it.

the AGP slot was cooked, for one reason or another, at that point. i don't know what did the system in, at that point, however both the mobo and the AGP vid card were dead at that point. i suppose that i could have kept things limping along using a PCI card at that point, however i didn't think that was worth it.

i don't know if the traces to the slot from the CPU were damaged by the bend in the PCB, or if it was somthing else. plenty of other people use heavy coolers without a problem.

unless you are going for the highest possible OC, in which case you should not be using air cooling, the XP-90 can probably get you where you want to be, at a reasonable price point, with reasonable heatsink weight. you can then install the fan that best suits you own performance/noise preferance.

I would consider the design of the heatsink before i would care about the weight.
You could have a heavy heatsink on your CPU but how the weight is distributed along the
socket is more important.

A heatsink that is more heavy but closer and wider to the board is going to cause less stress on the socket/mounting brackets.

A heatsink that is narrow and travels linear from the socket with long heatpipes connecting into a fin array will cause more stress to the socket and brackets, this is because the outward design of the heatsink does not offer a wide area of weight distribution, this will also cause the board to be more susceptible to damage during transport.

:p *wank wank wank*

pretty much all modern air coolers are of sufficiently similar height that the heatsink mass is a fair basis of comparison in so far as what torsional force the heatsink will put on the mobo once the assembly is actually installed.

what you are saying is perfectly true, however you seem to be focusing on details and neglecting the bigger picture.

ok bottom line.... is this scythe ninja gonna rip out my friggin mobo? =P should i just get an SI120?

You know I could be wrong but I cant imagine a good light (as in xp-90 weight) quality HS with an awesome fan being b**** slapped by another HS 2-4 times it's size and weight. Yeah, you might be looking at 2-3 degrees difference tops (with same ambient temp) but is that really worth the worry of mobo warpage and the PITA to remove it if you decide to start bringing your system to lan parties or just a friends house to get it on? If so, then I say be [H]ard and get that mofo and stop bullshi*** with it!! :D

eh... i'm in dental school.... i won't be going to any lan parties.... ever again .. lol but i'm just trying to find out what the chance of it warping pretty badly over the next 3-4 yrs

i guess that my point is simply that the XP-90 will get good results at a reasonable noise level and avoid any concern regarding weight.

Haha, no probably not. Atleast not for a while :p

don't be such a pessimist.

i still have plenty of years to go to get my present target of P. hydro geologist, and although it means that i need to work my balls off every summer, i still make sure to have a little bit of fun during the year.

hey i never said playing from my dorm room wasn't fun... wanna get pwn3d in q3? :DDDD

i'm kidding of course.... am i the only one that still thinks that's one of the best FPSs around to this day? :)
