Are Compaq Laptops bad?

I'm new to the lap top world. But are Compaq laptops bad?

i saw one at cicuit city that is a 2.86ghz P4 with 60gb, 512mb DDR, 128mb Radeon graphics and 15inch wide screen.

It was going for 1200 after rebates.

Is this a decent laptop for a college student who basically uses it for research projects, papers, the occassional photoshop project, etc.
 
As long as the photoshop project isn't huge, that should be sufficient. They're not that bad.
 
my laptop does well and i love the resolution of SXGA, but be warned - my presario 2500 is LOUD AS HELL
