Are 1000W PSUs "futureproof"?

I may be looking for a new power supply shortly, but once I find out, I won't have much time to make up my mind.

I currently have a 650 Antec Trio True Power

My system specs are below:

9800GX2
E6600 (Going to be upgrading to E8400 / E8500)
2GB memory (Going to be going to 4GB soon)
Rampage Formula Mobo
X-fi Extreme Music Sound card.
3 internal hard drives (Hopeful plans of getting a VelociRaptor RAID going once released)
3 external hard drives connected through USB, though all 3 are rarely all on at the same time
WinXP with plans to go Vista after a 4GB memory upgrade
4 120mm case fans

I first want to know whether or not I'm going to buy a 1000 watt PSU and in a FEW year need soemthing with either more wattage, or different types of connectors. I don't think I need 1000watt right now, especially since my 650 is running my current setup fine, but if I have the chance to upgrade, I want to upgrade to something that will have all the connections I'm going to need for a good 3 or more years. If new connections are going to be coming out though, then I don't think I want to spring for a 1000w right now.

Lastly, I have an Antec case that really needs a normal sized power supply. I know a bunch of 1000w PSUs are longer and my case will not fit a much longer PSU. If I remember correctly, it can hold a PSU with a depth of about 6.5 inches, but any more and cables will be running into fan blades.

2 6pin PCI-E powers
2 8pin PCI-E powers
1 8pin mobo power
3+ year warranty (standard?)
Depth no greater than 6 3/4 inches.

Ideas or recommendations? I'm looking to go with brand names and names that I can trust. I've already checked and Antecs 850 and 1000 watt are too long or very close.

EDIT: It looks like the cable length given with 1000w PSUs, I actually WILL need a modular PSU as the Antec case doesn't give room for a spot to hide all those cables.
 
I would say yes for the simple fact that even high end rigs today don't come any where near drawing 1000W, more like 400W. And as energy prices are going up every day, I think we've hit a power consumption plataeu. Now I've heard rumors of the GT200 drawing like 250W, which would be insane with two of them, so I think that number is a little off.

Things always change and there are no guarantees, but you should be go to with any quality 1000W for 3 years no problem.

I got an Enermax Galazy 1000W which seems solid, Th only problem with it like a lot of other 6+2 PCI-E plugs, the stupid retention clip won't fit in the 9800GX2!!!! So I broke it off, thoughyou can get exstenion cables to fix the problem. No biggie, power plug stays in as long as I'm not pulling on it.
 
I'm afraid the power supply I go with needs to be 100% compatible with my 9800GX with no adapters or clip bending, sheering, etc.
 
I can understand that. You won't have a problem with 9800 GTX, it only uses 6 pin plugs. The plugs from the Enermax fit fine in my 8800 Ultra which are the same as the 9800 GTX, two 6 pin.

I bought the Enermax because the Guru3d review said that it was the only PSU that didn't have that problem with the clip. However, since its only a piece of plastic holding in another piece of plastic, no biggie. I don't know how many rigs you've built in your life, sometimes you have to do things like this, its part of the game.

That said, you'll not find anything better than the Galaxy at 1000W from stability, heat and efficiency at the moment.
 
Not as concerned with functionality as I am about the ability to resale it if the opportunity arises.

I can tell you right now from looking at the first pics of the galaxy that it does NOT fit my dimension requirements. 220 mm (against 140 mm on regular power supplies)
 
I bought an Ultra X3 1000watt PSU and the 8 pin plug fits perfectly in my 9800GX2. I got it specifically because it got a good review on johnnyguru.com, it was cheap, $199.00 from Directron.com and it was guaranteed to fit by the Ultra representative I spoke to. He was right, it fits perfectly.I think it has something to do with it meeting ATX Version 2.2, v1.3, and ATX 12V Version 2.2 Specifications.

no way will there ever be a typical system that uses 1kw...most systems today don't even need more than 500w. With manufacturing tech going to 35nm soon, power consumption will even be lower...
