Arctic Silver

a very thin coat, put a small drop on it and spread it out...the thinner the better. You want to use it to transfer heat, not insulate it.
 
I usually cut a piece from a leftover plastic bag, like what screws or a computer component comes in, and wrap it around a credit card (usually my insurance card), and scrape the grease around. Once you spread it pretty well, try to scrape off the surface. What matters most is that you fill in the microscopic spaces. You don't want much more than that.
