Have you heard the rumours of this guy, shekelman or whomever, who says he's from BFG and they put arctic silver on the Memory/core of the 6800??

don't believe it.

I just took my bfg apart and found cheap thermal pads over the memory; they use some sort of compound on the core. One of the thermal pads was totally not even on my memory! This looked sloppy to me.

so...taking a deep breath, I cleaned the pads and core and applied my own arctic silver I had leftover from installing my cpu. The scariest part was trying to remember the order I took everything apart and then putting it back together again; but actually it's not that difficult.

I used to have idles in the 59-60 range, now it's at 54 while surfing.

AFter running Real Time HDR RBL for 5 minutes, my ambient temp. got to 54 and peak core was 79-80. This was a good improvement of about 7-10C peak temperature running this demo.

Yeah, I can see from looking at my 6800 Ultra sideways that there are thermal pads on the memory.

yah, I see thermal pads on my memory as well. I wonder if they just hit the core with artic silver?

He never said the memory, just the core IIRC

about the memory, gddr3 doesn't run very hot anyways, ATI runs the same chips at the same speeds w/o ramsinks, so it seems that the ram wouldn't necessitate heavy duty cooling and the pads should be sufficient. (though the fact that they went through the trouble to put a heatpipe on the ramsinks is a direct contradiction to cheaping out on the ram TIM)

ya when i took mine out of box, i saw it on the side too. wasnt too worried about it as it was on the memory, not from the core.

They are using AS 5 on the core, but the white pads on the memory comes that way direct from Nvidia. I don't know what the big deal is on AS 5 anyway. it doesn't perform as well as Shin Estu.

Not that it matters to me,

:D

Doesn't cost as much either. Unless it's topical ice, it ain't worth that kind of money. :p

That's weird that my temps would drop then. My core is definately cooler. Plus, like I said, the pads were on really sloppy.

Sniper, that's a nice cooling jobbie, let's see some more pics and links to the product. What is yours running at now?

PS: Man, seeing that Nvidia core all cleaned and gleaming silver...kinda like catching a look at a UFO. Very nice!

now that im watercooling i get the exact same mem over clock as when i had all the stock garbage on it.

Probably because your not watercooling your memory anyway... ;)

Just wondering, on those cards is it just one big heatsink that cools the core and mem? Maybe they used pads on the mem due to the core and mem not being the same height?

Here it is in the case

Can see all the pics I took while Installing it here
http://snipershide.free-universe.com/remote_pics/zalman_zm80d-hp/

you can pick it up at SVC or Newegg, heres product link to Zalman

As for temps,
Idle Temps:
Ambient Room Temp right this minute is 76.3 F
CPU Temp 114 F via MBM 5 (on chip thermal diode)
Case Temp 95 F via MBM 5
Nvidia Ambient Temp monitor 36 C
Nvidia GPU Temp 53 C

Load Temps Running rthdribl:
Ambient Room Temp right this minute is 76.2 F
CPU Temp 123 F via MBM 5 (on chip thermal diode)
Case Temp 96 F via MBM 5
Nvidia Ambient Temp monitor 48 C
Nvidia GPU Temp 69 C

Pretty much what I expected for an overall load temp drop from 84C previously. 15C is nothin to sneeze at ;)

Heres link to my website with complete specs and more pics Snipershide just click on The System link on the left.

They are seperate units, one in center to cover the GPU core and the other unit wraps around to cover all the memory sinks.

They did use the pads partly because they are likely not all the same height, but its not like its more than about .010 of an inch, I think they did it for piece of mind and to limit the overclock.
