I recently removed the thermal patch which came with my P4 3.6 GB “Prescott” and replaced it with Arctic Silver 5. I removed the bulk of thermal patch with a credit card. I then rubbed the remains off, multiple times, with 91% Isopropyl Alcohol. I followed this with multiple cleanings of the CPU and heat sink by rubbing them with “Goof Off”. I then used the alcohol and made multiple cleanings as a final step.

I applied the Arctic Silver 5 per their web site instructions. Upon reassembling my system, my CPU is now running 6° C hotter than before (it was running at 48°). Per Arctic Silver, the temperature should drop by 2°-5° over the course of 8+ days. If so, my CPU will be running hotter than it was before I applied Arctic Silver 5.

Does anybody know if this is normal?

•Enermax 600 WATT “Noisetaker” power supply
•Asus P5AD2 Premium
•2 GB Corsair XMS2 DDR2
•2 Maxtor 250 GB SATA (RAID 0)
•Inexpensive PCIe graphics card (while the market matures)
•Antec P160 case, modified by adding four additional 120mm Enermax fans. The case now has 5 intake and 1 rear exhaust.

you probably didn't seat the heatsink correctly... did u take off the heatsink then looked if the as5 was covering the core fully..?


o yeah and i have a question for you.. where did you get your rubbing alcohol..? me needs a bottle but can't find a 90% or higher one..
 
Hey, at safeway they have 99% isopyral or however u spell it, its works pretty gosh darn good. Its in the pharmacy area.
 
AS5 needs time to"break in" then your temps will drop it doesnt magically make yer temps drop upon initial application of it. give it about 4 days or so and see what your temps are like then.
 
1) I got the 91% isopropyl at Walgreen's.

2) The HSF is flush as I re-seated it twice to insure. But the AS5 only made a circular spot in the middle where applied - like shown on their web site.

Thats pretty strange. When I installed my XP-120 (with AS5) I immediately noticed a 5-10C drop in temperature. Make sure you seated the heatsink properly. When I was installing mine I didn't know you had to use so much force to lock it in place. Also while I was installing it I had to use different screws for the backplate thanks to ASUS's damn StackCool.
 
I reversed three fans making them exhaust. I now have two intake and four exhaust. The temperature reduced by 2 degrees C. The two intake are directly over the CPU and video card (and other slots).

This doesn't change the the fact that the CPU is still running hotter than it was. I'll probably give it the recommended 8 days of thermal cycling before I try to reapply AS5 and reseat the HSF.

Sc4freak - I was lucky enough to have the right length and thread screws available to mount the XP-120 775 adapter to the Asus P5AD2 Premium MOBO.

I just went to the drugstore to get some isopropyl alcohol and the highest percent they had was 91. So I bought it. That's fine, right? I don't need 99% like Ice found, do I?
 
1. you have to spread the AS5 on the heatsink's surface - evenly and thinly.

2. you may have to lap the heatsink, if it's warped.

3. my 3.0C is at 3.3 (right now - used to be at 3.75 but i'd have to turn the fans up all the way) - at 29C idle, 37C load.

Reseating the HS could have introduced small air pockets inbetween the HS and the AS5 and thus the core.

Clean it all off again and apply a thin even layer to the core, seat the HS ONCE, then see what you get.
 
If you only got a spot in the middle, I wonder if your heatsink (or CPU for that matter) is not flat
 
You do NOT need to spread it out....eventually someone will realise that. Spreading it out over an IHS causes a sort of insulation....less is more is the best way I can describe it. I've had nothing but good temps from my XP-120 and AS5....and temps went down after setting. Idunno, seems weird, I'm out of ideas since you already checked the coverage on your CPU....damn hot prescotts :D
 
What I was getting at is if you put a drop in the middle, or anywhere, when even pressure is applied, it should spread out. When it gathers in a pool then there is more space there from the 2 surfaces not matching. But I agree, less is more.

Where are you taking that temp from?
 
personally i think it is crazy to expect huge results from thermal paste, it's only going to make so much difference, and to even see it show up (5-10C means something else was going on besides the paste, maybe a bad mount job) is pretty rare in my experience. I've seen test comparisons between thermal pastes, and maybe there's a small change, but it's not likely to open up the flood gates of mhz.
 
You may "realise" that you CAN spread it out if you want to, and suffer NO ill effects. I did it on my SI-97. I much rather have a full yet VERY thin layer of AS5 covering the enitre heat core, then just a small amount in the center.
