i realized today i didnt use nearly enough arctic silver 5 after looking at instructions on their site. i used the old rice grain technique, put a grain of rice size bead in the very center. would i notice substantial difference if i dismout the heatsink, put on the line of arctic silver they recommend, then remount the heatsink? this is on a q6600

Even better, use MX-2, its thinner so spreads easier and conducts heat better.
It also doesnt conduct electricity at frequency like AS5 so you dont risk hurting components if you accidentally leave traces anywhere.

Yep, I can definitely quantify a 2c drop of temperature using MX-2 rather than cured AS5... I booted up after cleaning my current setup (Worklog) and temperatures were 8c lower... Then I cleaned the cured AS5, swapped it for MX2, and I'm currently loading another 2-3c lower...

Just installed it tonight actually!

Cheaper than AS5, and twice the amount per tube = win.

I had an old tube (I mean really old) of AS 3 that I used to get good results with. I ran out and bought some AS5 which I cannot seem to apply properly. One time it works great, then next, horrible.

It's so much thicker then the AS3 I used to use, it's like it won't spread good.

I since grabbed a tube of AS Ceramaque <sp> which I've been having pretty good results with.

I also got a tube of some sort of silver dow-corning stuff that came with a cooler I picked up on ebay. The consistancy of it was perfect, and it seemed to cure very fast. Wish I knew where to get more of it.

I would recommend re-applying as instructed on their site. You probably will not notice "substantial" difference, but there may be a few degrees of improvement after the burn-in period. But make sure to clean off the cpu's IHS and the heatsink base before re-applying.
