i just received my A64 3500 winchester from monarch computers, and they included instructions which stated not to use "metalic thermal compound." they also said it would void the warranty. now would as5 be considered that? if so, would using the shin etsu compound that came with my tt venus 12 heatsink be better?

they want you to use the thermal pad that comes with the heat sink.. but as long as you do it right.. there no way of them knowing that you used metalic :p

Aren't certain compounds like ceramique also adhesives which make it a PITA to take the heatsink off?

AS5 is not much better than AS3, AS5 is metallic and will leave crap behind and will be tough to clean off if you do need to return it. Ceramique is difficult to remove because it creates a suction force due to its thickness. Think about putting 2 pieces of glass together with some water in between, it is a similar effect.

sooo.. you're saying i shouldn't use the as5 on my 3500? use the shin etsu instead? i thought the as5 wasn't electrically conductive...

Shin etsu is better than as5 anyway. But if you did use as5, it is very EASY to clean up, not hard like these guys would have you believe. Some isopropyl alcohol and napkin/swabs is all you need to remove every single trace of it.

Yes, technically using arctic silver 5 will void your warranty.

However, it is quite simple to clean off, and if you do need to return the cpu, just use some isopropyl alcohol, as the above post says.

Don't worry about it unless you bought a retail cpu, as the warranty for OEM models isn't long at all.

Don't worry about it anyway...just be smart about the application and cleanup.

AS cleanup was more of a problem with ceramic on the processors (like on old athlons). The organic packaging they have now is less likely to soak it up.

Why dont you just try an overclock with what they gave you ?

You already have a high end chip and games these days wont really improve too much wether you 200 or 500 over.

Give it a try , watch your temps and if you dont like you can always switch it out .

I am speaking for a gazillion people out there, I use AS5 on my A64 and it is just fine. Its very easy to clean up if you are planning to fry your chip and I would argue it is the top performing stuff on the market (lets not change the direction of this thread though). Dont even think twice.
