I was reading the instructions for applying AS5 for an A64, are you not supposed to put any AS5 on the heatsink and only put a small blob on the center of the heatspreader?

Put on a thin layer on the spreader and put it on the HS and just wipe it off with a lint free cloth. That way all the nooks and crannies on the HS will be fillled

the reason that you want to put a small amount on the HSF and then rub it off is to "condition" the HSF.... basically what it does is the residue from the AS is filling in the gaps to make a better bond with the TIM and the CPU. This applied to the old AS products.. I still us this application method and it does not seem to hurt anything. If Silversinksam was around he could tell ya exactly what it does... seeing as how he works for AS. anyway I hope that this helped clear it up for you

Don't know what you've been smoking, but I don't work for Arctic Silver, and never have.

But you gave the same information as I would have given ;)

So for the IHS, i should just put a little blob in the center?

Yes, that is all you need. It will spread itself out by the pressure of the heatsink. After 200 hours or so you will see optimal results.
