I just got an ATI Silencer 5 (Rev. 2) for my ATI x800xl recently and after getting it installed, the fan doesnt spin right when I turn on the computer. Is this normal?? should i find a way to get power directly from the power supply or should i rely on power from the video card.

I have double checked to make sure that the plug from the cooler is plugged into the video card securely.

I too had an AC ATI Silencer 5 R2. I got it for my Connect3d x800GTO. I never had any problems with the fan on mine. Although AC claims the fan header on the videocard is plenty of juice for their fans, I wired mine directly to one of the Molex's off the power supply.

I have since replaced the AC ATI Silencer with a Zalman VF900... a much better product in my opinion.
