Does anyone here own or know somebody that owns an Archos tablet? I'm wondering how the battery life is.

Thanks.

Can only speak for the gen8's. Mine was an Archos 101 8gig. With the wifi off and brightness low, it can play 720p for eight hours straight. With a WD Passport attached, it can play videos off that for 5 hours.

Was the wifi on? I'm only interested in using it for surfing the web. Maybe I'll do other things, but that's mostly what I want it for. I suppose I should have said so in the original post.

No hard numbers for web browsing i'm afraid. I rarely used it for browsing until the battery ran out with a stopwatch next to me (Yes, i did those video tests several times with a stopwatch).

If you'd like to know more user experiences regarding battery life, i'd suggest the unofficial forum

... and do a search in the G9 section. :)

Ok, thanks. I'll ask there, but if you get 5 hours playing movies w/ wifi on, then that's long enough for me.

Nope, that's wifi-off. And the G8 is a 2010 single core model. You really will have to ask the forums for up to date user experience with the 2011 dual core G9's.

The thing is, Archos is a company that specializes in portable media players. When they started implementing android, they heavily modified it to work like a media center (i.e. their previous non-android tablets). It's primarily a media player with Apps tacked on, the modifications may make it a good media player, but it also comes at the cost of stability in other apps. Their G8's can play more videos than Tegra 2 (Personal experience, i also have a TF101), and according to the users i've asked, the G9's play more videos than TF201. But the TF101 does crash less than the Archos101 and i'd hazard to guess that the trait carried over to the next generation. As such, i can only recommend one if you're a video enthusiast.

PS: This one says it's 7 hours of web browsing

This is rather surprising. Guess they've put in bigger batteries in the new version.

I just want one to surf the web at starbucks for 10 minutes a day. No real heavy usage. It doesn't have to be anything fancy. I'm only considering Archos because they have a cheap model. I can only assume they just use the same battery tech in all their models.
