I'm looking to archive old family footage onto DVD recordable media. I'm building a new machine for this purpose and I know I need a bit of quality capture hardware. Most of the footage is Hi8, but its a mix of lots of various types.

I was looking at the Canopus ADVC1394 as it seemed to have a good number of features, with a not overly high pricetag ($249). But what would you guys recommend.

An AIW card might do, but I like the idea of how this device keeps the audio sync'd with the video in hardware.

Thanks alot, really appreciate it.

groggory, I'm actually undertaking an identical project with my family's home movies. I decided on an all in wonder card, it should arrive tomorrow. I'm still not sure what software will be best but i think i'll try pinnacle (which is included with the aiw card) I'll let you know how i do. The only thing i'll be missing is a dvd burner but i may order one yet.

If anyone else has done something like this before feel free to add any hints or suggestions.

$250 seems a little steep. I got my dad a $50ish TV card (with a radio :D) for Xmas and he's more than happy with it.

I use a Ti4200 VIVO with Powerdirector Pro.
As far as MPEG and MPEG2 it stays synchronized just fine. I edit the vids, compress and clean up with VirtualDub. The MPEG file plays back fine, but VDub needs some work synchronizing. I think this will be a problem regardless of what you use.
If I use Powerdirector to recompress, I still have synch problems.

Unless you have a need for an all new graphics board as well, don't buy an AIW for just the VIVO capability. I have a Leadtek TV 2000XP and it does VCR work just fine.
