archival discs really better?

So I'm looking at using optical discs as a complement to my backup system and was looking at various companies "archival" quality discs and was wondering if anyone was aware of any good data on the subject. The discs are obviously more expensive so it just seems to me like unless there's actual good data to backup the various marketing claims, that I would just stick with cheaper discs.

I guess beyond looking for data, what are your opinions on these archival discs and are the particular ones you'd recommend?

If these are for long-term (5 - 10 year plus) storage of your discs some of the "archival" discs are supposed to have more stable dyes, but if this is just for general backup I do not believe the additional expense is worth it.

FYI Taiyo last I knew was being bought out by JVC.

@OP: Archival media can be much more stable. My institution does lots of archival CD-media recording, and we were early to hop on the burnable-CD craze. Like most, we lost most of our first few years of CD archives, as we were unwittingly using crap CD media like everyone else i.e. Memorex etc...and only realized what was going on when customers were finding corrupted discs. Went Taiyo, and haven't had a problem since.
 
i guess it's bad i've never heard of taiyo yuden?

do they make archival blu ray discs?
i was looking at the delkin archival blu ray discs, is that not a good way to go?
 
What about M-Discs ? I just ordered an LG BR burner and noticed it could burn M-Discs. Apparently those are DVDs with a non organic dye that is etched by the laser and is unalterable. They claim 1000 years of life.

Yup, but the tooling and facilities (and therefore hopefully the quality) has been retained. Indeed most new TY media you buy will be labeled 'JVC Taiyo Yuden'.
