I just got my first A64 939 and back in the AXP Socket A days there was no heat speader to protect the core and I just put thermal paste on the core, but on an A64 do I cover the whole thing with thermal paste? or is there just a certain spot like in the center to put my thermal paste? Thanks and sorry for the noob question as this is my Second A64 Build First Build I used the Stock HSF and that had the Thermal Interface Material. But the second CPU I bought used for $20 without a HSF Thanks

If you're doing it spread style instead of Arctic Silver's reccomended "pea" style, you spread the paste throughout. That big metal cap on the processor is actually designed to spread the heat from the core.

i use the bead method...just drop a bead of AS5, about 3/4 the size of a peice of rice in the middle of the heatspreader. I place the HSF on the CPU and kinda smear it left and right before i tighen my down. This has always worked for me and never had a problem with this method.

On the Socket A's it was common to spread the TIM to cover the core. On the A64 just put a drop (piece of rice size) on the heatspreader and put the HSF on it. It'll sort itself out. :)
