applying thermal paste to a DHT cooler?

ive never applied thermal paste to any cpu before, so this is all new to me. from what im reading, applying tim to an hdt cooler is a bit trickier.

any suggestions on how to do this? im installing an A70. i was thinking of filling in the gaps in the a70 and scrapping smooth, and then applying a thin layer to the cpu with my finger, then mounting the hs.
 
I would fill in the gaps on the cooler and scrape it smooth and put a standard size blob on the cpu and mount. I aim for the "double grain of rice" size blob and it works well for me.
 
I like the scraping method, but some say it can trap air bubbles. There is a guide on here or a link to on here, with pictures on how to do it. You dont want to apply paste on both items, that's too much. Do a search.

So what you mean by DHT? Direct heatpipe touch? Thats HDT and that guide has one for that too. You get best results by filling the gaps, scraping of excess and then applying thin lines between the heatpipes. Cross shape might work too, especially if the spaces between heatpites are too thin to apply any paste.

"That" guide actually covers the desired HDT method, it's on Page 6.

It's also the first Google result, so while he was a bit obnoxious in his response, he did point to the right article.
 
got it installed this afternoon, bit of a pain in the ass. took forever to get all the gaps filled, and getting the upper fan in was also a huge pain. but, its all in and running well, so i must have done something right.



on my stock 955, im at 20C idle, 36C with all cores at 100%.
10mins of prime95 and i hit a max of 38c, 100f.

To fill the gaps I would place a flat surface on the bottom and then inject the paste with a syringe from one end until it came out the other side, this should ensure no air gaps exist.

I have a Cogage. True Spirit on the way I am considering machining the base down to make it DHT type.

while it does seem a bit cool, im not sure its outside the realm of possibility. on my stock hs, i was at 28-32c idle, 48-50c max. 54c once on a 100 degree day with the windows open.

i think its reasonable to assume that a massive hs like this could knock temps down 10c across the board.
