Some users have recently had their accounts hijacked. It seems that the now defunct EVGA forums might have compromised your password there and seems many are using the same PW here. We would suggest you UPDATE YOUR PASSWORD and TURN ON 2FA for your account here to further secure it. None of the compromised accounts had 2FA turned on.
Once you have enabled 2FA, your account will be updated soon to show a badge, letting other members know that you use 2FA to protect your account. This should be beneficial for everyone that uses FSFT.
This is gonna sound really stupid but how do I apply the thermal grease? I have the little sticker (Socket A), and do I apply the sticky side on the microprocessor of the cpu? Then do I apply the grease on the non-sticky side?
First of all, there should be absolutly NO sticky stuff anywhere near your processor or heatsink. If there is, clean it off with some isopropyl alcohol so you get a nice clean surface on both the processor and heatsink.
Here are some easy steps to apply thermal grease:
1) Clean CPU and heatsink free of all foreign substances. Take off all "stickers", protective films, etc...
2) Install processor into socket in motherboard.
3) Apply a SMALL drop (rice or BB sized) of thermal paste directly onto the processor core. For most AMD systems, this is the rectangular black think in the middle of the chip. Do not put thermal paste anywhere else.
4) Spred the thermal paste so it covers the processor core in a thin film. Make sure the coating is even and leaves no sections of the core visable. You can do this with your fingers, a credit or playing card, your choice really. Just get a even thin coating.
5) Install the heatsink according to the manufacturers instructions. Usually this means placing the heatsink on the processor and clamping it down. When you do this, take care not to slide the heatsink around on top of the processor or lift up the heatsink after making contact with the processor and thermal paste. If you do slide the heatsink around too much and/or lift the heatsink away, Go to step #1 and start over.
That should do it. Hope this makes sense. I know some people have different views on the "best" way to apply thermal paste, but this is a surefire way to apply the paste and not screw up.
My guess is that his heatsink came with a thermal pad and he was trying to apply TIM as well. You only need one, so go with the better choice, the compound, and follow the other suggestions and toss that pad in the trash.
