i just read on arctic silver how to apply it doesnt seem to hard but the 3200+ stock fan has a little thermal paste underneath the heatsink would i have to scrape that off or just put the coolant past eontot he processor leave that little pad and just put hte heatsink on with the pad onto the processor with the coolant paste??

If you're using AS5 you must remove the thermal pad from the bottom of the cooler. Do not use AS5 in conjunction with the thermal pad. You can remove the thermal pad with any Xylene based solvent such as Goo-Off or any carbuerator cleaner. Clean it with alcohol after you've used the solvent to remove the pad.

um where exactly could i get a solvent or Goo-Off i found Goo-Off online but would it be available at like target?or walmart or something?

Oops , Well im idling at 24*c right now so im not complaining

actually i just read somewhere that i could just use alcohol and rub it off is that true?cuz im gettn my motehrboard saturday and unless i can get Goo-Off in store then i dunno would rubbing regualr alcohol work???

Yea , you can use 90% propolyne alchohol to clean it off with a lintless cloth.(correct me if im wrong)
I was just to lazy when i switched motherboards so i just added some as5 to the
thermal pad that was already melted on there.

It really depends on what you get on your heatsink.. Some of the newer heatsinks are coming with more of a pastey substance rather than a pad. The pads I'm talking about are usually black if I'm not mistaken. If you get a pad, it will be a pain in the ass to get off without a xylene based solvent. If it's the new pastey grey stuff you should be able to get it off with regular old alcohol.

I'm pretty sure they sell Goo-Off at local places.. check walmart, if they don't have it check a hardware store or something.

Use at least 90% isopropyl alcohol to clean your heatsink.

Do not spread the AS5 on your processor. Put a small dot in the middle and let the pressure of the heatsink spread it out.
If you were applying the thermal compound to a bare core processor, you spread out the thermal compound evenly with as little as you can. I use credit cards to spread mine.

I use the dot method on naked chips and it works fine also. You just don't use as much.
I also put electrical tape all around the core to protect the circuitry just in case I put a little too much and it splooges out from the sides.

But either way, you can't go wrong by just reading the instructions on the website.

If you do it on bare cores and you don't use enough, the corners will be exposed to the air. If too much is used, it will go over the edges and that can be a bad thing if the thermal compond is conductive.

Why does everybody continue to recommend at least XX% I.A.?

The point is just to get the junk off. There's not a really magical way to do it, but just do it. Non-acetone nail polish removers work good for me, just make sure it doesn't have any really corrosive properties. Friction and a cotton ball or swab also get 99% of the junk off.
