Do I want to put the "thin line" parallel or perpendicular to the writing on the chip?

I'd check the AS site but it's down =/

i put 3 lines about 1/16 wide and apart, starting in the center of it across the ihs and mine runs 36c at idle even o/c'ed to 2.8ghz on stock hsf!

It doesn't matter.

The key is not to use too much. The only purpose that thermal paste serves is to "fill in" the microscopic machining grooves left on your heatsink. Too much will actually make your temps higher.

according to as guides, you must apply it in the middle perpendicular to the writing (i.e. vertically)

I put that much (not alot) and then take my heatsink and softly lay it on the cpu and turn it in a circular motion and then fully mount it.
