thinking of doing that for my 9600xt, cause currently it ocs like absolute crap. can only get the core up a freaking 15mhz, and overdrive even causes artifacts. so is as5 safe? like i heard its conductive or something, so would it fry my card? also, i can't figure out how to take the stock hsf off the celestica 9600xt!
 
Its fine, i used it on my 9700. just dont use a gallon so it oozes out onto the componentes
 
As far as taking that HSF off, I cant help you. It looks like something you may want to twist like the lid on a jar or something, but dont quote me on that. There may be an equal chance of removing your GPU from the PCB.
What I would really reccomend if you want good overclocking out of that card is to put an old CPU HSF on it using any creative method that you can come up with. That stock cooler is the same one that came on my 8500 and it kinda bites. If you ever get it off of there I would reccomend that you not put it back on and replace it with someting else. Maybe you could use it to cool your southbridge or something. Also, you may want to chop up some old heatsinks and make your own ramsinks for the video card ram. Use thermal adhesive epoxy for that. But be warned that epoxy never should come off.
 
Don't bother overclocking a 9600XT. The performance increase will not be huge.
 
9600Xt's are pretty much junk, and it's not hard to figure out how to take the heatsink off. Step 1: look how it is attached Step 2: Take heatsink off.

From that picture you can see 2 black thumb screw type things holding the card in place. they have 2 extrusions on the screws that poke out on the other side. Get a pair of needle nose plyers or something, and squeeze the end of it so it can fit through the hole, then proceed to push it through. Repeat for other screw.
 
damn i can't figure out how to take the hs off :(

i did pull out the pin that is in the two clip of the hs, but it seems that i need a really strong pair of tweezers to get the last two clips out.

I have seen 9600XT's overclocked to around a stock 9800 Pro...

To do so the core would have to be at 760mhz and the memory would have to be at 1360mhz(2720mhz effective).

Sorry, but I find that just a little hard to believe considering that I can't clock my 9600XT past 560mhz on the core.
 
dont get off topic u guys.. hes asking about his 9600xt and HSF removal and overlcocking.. not comparing it to a 9800 pro.. and it doesn't matter if 9600xt overclocks like crap.. which i don't know if it's true or not.. oveclocking it is worth it..
 
Dunno... 9600 XT's are pretty much already overclocked 9600 pro's, mine only went up 25 on the core and 35 on the memory
 
I wonder if a Vantec Iceberq/AS5 and maybe some RAMsinks would help that at all. But I've also heard at a couple hardware forums that 9600XTs don't overclock very well. I guess that means that they're only "crap" if you want to overclock them. ;)
 
i thought the 9600xt's core can get like 100 mhz over stock..? i have a maximum pc magazine here and they overclocked thier 9600xt in the 9600xt vs 5700 ultra article over 100 mhz... on air.
