Applying Artic Silver 5 Question?

On one of my friends computers, he is getting temps of 55 -60 degrees on idle speeds on his Pentium 4 530 Processor. He is using the stock heatsink it came with. He going to go pick up a new heatsink and some of that Artic Silver 5 thermal paste stuff. The question we have, how much do we put on it? Also, do we put the paste on the processor, or some place else? Yes this is a noob question :D
 
i put the size of a green pea on my cpu, and then i pressed my heatsink on it and attached it. Then i gently twisted it left and right to spread it.
 
i actually apply the AS5 directly to the heatspreader on top of the CPU then take a flat knife / exacto knife / side of fork and kinda of spread it as smoothly and evenly and THIN layer over the top, with (if any) largest goup in the middle.

and yea, i start with half a pinky fingernails worth, though that might be bigger than a grain or rice, smaller than a green pea. and if i need a tad more, then i put it on.

That's not what the instructions on their website suggest though. They say you should apply about a grain of rice worth of AS5 to the center of the CPU and then bring the heatsink straight down on it. Do you have reason to believe your technique produces better results?

It doesnt. The reason you should follow the directions is because the stuff that makes up AS5 is the size of "microns" Those lil silver particles fill up all the ridges and valeys you cant see.

I'd suggest lapping that HS. Then apply the grain of rice to the cpu die. Then apply the HS as instructed. Your more likely to get the full contact & not have any "air pockets" to trap heat.
