applications folder empty

this is kind of a wierd problem. after I updated Adium, Growl, and Microsoft Messenger, my computer was responding really slow. i didnt understand what was happening, so i was going to delete the programs to see if that helped. the Applications folder is completely empty.

- at the bottom of the finder window i see "0 items"
- in the info window it says that the folder is 4.97GB though

all my programs seem to work fine though, it just takes them long to start up.

it also does this in other user accounts, aswell as root.

they all show up in terminal though.

it seems like they are just hidden or something.

it seems like a stupid, quick fix, but i can't figure out whats going on. my main concern is how slowly everything is reacting. it almost feels like my beigebox after being infected with spyware and all that jazzy crap.

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.
