I am about to get a Macbook, how many people out there have the Apple Protection Plan? Is it worth it? I take care of my stuff, and the only thing i could see going wrong with my laptop is breaking my screen, and i am too careful to let that happen, SO, any thoughts?

With how much apple replacement parts cost your better off getting the APP just in case. This isn't to make sure they fix whatever you break, but what you have no control over, such as parts wearing out, your laptop screen just plain giving out, or your motherboard dying. Both of which are probably $800+ replacement part costs. Definately worth the APP.

If you need to save cash, you have 1yr from your purchase date to get your APP which adds another 2yrs of warranty to your purchase date. So you can buy it later if you dont have the cash immediately.

I'd wait 6 months, which would mean a drop in the price of apps, and pick one up frome bay, they are around 165$ now(on ebay), they should drop to 140-110

Normally, im against extendend warrenties...(*cough* being a former best buy employee), however my g/f has a powerbook g4 thats like 1.5 yrs old and she's used apple care more than once already. If you take your macbook into an applestore with a problem and an APP, they'll do just about anything to fix it and or give a new one if its really that broken. Obviously, there are limitations...such as it doesnt cover your battery wearing out (unless theres a recall on it or something) Or purposly hitting it with a hammer or something....im sure there are other limitations....(i dont think spilling booze on it is covered....so keep it away from any drunken roomates). But ya, id pick up applecare if not right away, before your warrenty is up.

last time I read my best buy ew booklet, it covered everything from nothing to nothing :D

That sounds like a good idea. I think I can do that, especially since it cuts down on initial costs.

really? so that means dont get ew's from best buy huh? =) This is good to know if thats what you mean

Extended warrantys are worth it for mobile devices. If you bought the notebook with a CC, check to see if they warranty electronic/computer purchases. I think AMEX tacks on 2-3 years of computer warranty?

Applecare for notebooks has 2 downfalls.

1. Battery is only covered the first year(most warranties will not cover more then one year)
2. Cracked screens are not covered(once again most don't cover this)

The phone support is a toss up but some people like it. One of the nice things about apple with applecare is they have in the past fixed things that most compaines warranties would not. An example of this would be the ti powerbooks had an issue with the paint chipping around the palm rest. Apple took this as a defect and was replacing the palm rests under applecare. I remember fighting a retailer's warranty dept for a friend as they refused to fix the palm rest saying it was cosmetic(which is true but if apple covered it they should). Also apple parts are pretty expensive. I'd consider the warranty hard if I were you. Also I know someone will chime in and say applecare is a service not a warranty and yes I know that but warranty gets the point accross.

Bottom line APP covers just about anything you had no control over. If you drop your laptop constantly and there are bumps and scrapes all over it, don't expect apple to replace your HD or Cracked LCD when you bring it in. Basically if you take care of your laptop and all of a sudden the logic board dies, apple will replace it. If you take care of it and your LCD or HD dies, apple should replace it. Dont expect this to be like a Dell Complete care warranty :p if you piss on it and throw it out a car window, Apple will not replace it like dell will lol.

Exactly, apple is smart enough not to screw you over, but also smart enough not to screw themselves over. APP is a buy on computers, extended warrenties i would also buy on mobile phones even at BB (i cant tell you how many free phones ive gotten because minen just 'broke'). Any other warrenty at BB i would recommend just not getting, even on their laptops (get it through the manufacture or CC like a preivous poster mentioned). So far, O.P., im thinking most people are siding on getting the APP. So you have our opinion, now go get that laptop youve been drooling over :D

As an FYI. If a part is determined 'defective' by Apple, and was a design flaw, you don't need an APP for them to fix it.

Right, because you have a 1Y hardware when you buy your mac anyway, and 90 days phone support. (which i find ironic..you can always take it to an apple store and get techsupport if you really need it)
So basically your laptop will be covered for a year whether u like it or not :D

I said that wrong. I should have said after the first year. Third party warranties were not fixing the paint issue on the ti for example after 2 years or so when it really started to show up when apple care was. I should have made my point clear. Thats for pointing that out.

Just do yourself a favor and get it, replacement parts can be as much as new one.

Hint: some university bookstores give it for free if you buy the macbook form them

Yes. they do

thanks for proving nothing idiot.

again, what is your opinion on APP for ipods?

does the cost covering anything in your opinion? I think most problems with portable ipod will be theft, loss or accidents (not covered). What do you think?

Some stores have there own warranty for ipods which is about the same price but is an instore replacement. I would look at them even though most of them are 1 time replacements. I would prefer getting a new one then having apple mail me a refurb. Also if the model goes away and yours fails you have a better chance of an upgrade.

sry for misreading the question, i'm only human. And i hope you are happy calling me an idiot since you seem so wise as not be able to read the apple website and the conditions of APP.

Anyway to answer your question. It is worth it, if you are afraid of opening the iPod and changing the battery yourself if it dies. After a year nearly every apple battery loses in performance to get a new one, so instead of paying $100 for a new battery from apple you can get them for free for three years if you pay $69 once.

It helps if you are intelligent (which I doubt in your case) enough to act stupid and if you drop it, put in the washing machine, etc. that it will be replaced. Cracked screens (with nearly everything with apple) are not covered, since they believe that it is your fault anyway.

Also helps if the internals fail for whatever reason, cause they will be replaced for free and you might even get a new one if it is at the end of the APP or a bigger one if you show enough a annoyance (happened to a couple of my friends).

I, personally, didn't buy and regret it right now because mine is starting to act up after 2 years, so buy it and you can always do the replacements yourself (mainly battery) after it has run out. Since i don't see how $70 can hurt you.

Hope i could help, and a look on the apple website always helps, since it is very detailed. And i hope from now on your consider your choice of words, since humans make mistakes

Yes, I am extremely happy and I stand fast to the claim.

And you are the one that mis read me. Anywho, apology accepted.

Moving on. Any one else wish they had or used the APP for ipods? Seems like the most usual suspects (theft, loss, accident) are not covered. I am surprised that power surge is not covered as well.

My opinion is that if the ipod will mechanically fail, then it will do so quite quickly (in first year). That is what is covered. I have no basis to make that claim except from other electronics (not ipod specific). Please correct me if I am wrong.

Having said all that, I'll probably buy the APP for my ipod once the year is up.

On a good note. My nano has a stuck hold button. I logged on to the Apple site on Saturday and filled out the form. The shipping package was waiting for me today (Monday morning). That was fast. Hopefully it will be just as fast to get it back.

Just another note. Buy it before the year the over since after that you can't activate it, just as a hint.

The iPod most probally won't fail mechanically (i know people who have 1st generation iPod in perfect mechanica condition), it is the battery that faily way to often.

apparently the best way to do this is to let the first year automatic warranty run close to out and before it expires, grab the 2 year APP. that way you can get 3 years, instead of just 2.

i know you can do this, but I don't know if you buy the APP from the get go if you only get 2 years total.

No real point in that, as yes...you get the full 3 years right off the bat.

The only real point to waiting to buy the APP is because A) lower initial cost or B) you might be selling it within a year anyway.
