Hey guys..im about 4 days away from the expiring of my 1 year warranty on my White Macbook. I was wondering if you guys think I should get it. It's $183 with my student discount. Any ideas on it?
 
Like all warranties, eventually it'll expire. However, if you have any kind of hardware problem during the warranty, Apple is legendary for its service. In many cases, they'll ship a new laptop instead of repairing a broken one, even if it's well over a year old.

Thanks again Wolf for the insight, I'll run over to the apple store here in Chicago and pick it up. I'm so anal about buying warranties, and this also being my first Mac.

**Off topic** to Wolf, do you ever run your MBP in Clamshell mode? for a display etc.?
 
I agree, go for it. Applecare is one of the few extended warranties that are actually worth it, in my opinion.

Also, I've run my MacBook Pro with the lid shut a few times. Never had a problem. Although I tend to leave it open since it does give me a little extra screen space, and the display on my MBP is much nicer than the 18" LCD I have on my desk.
 
If you do decide to buy it, you will need to call them on the phone to register (and possibly buy) it. Being just 4 days in, I think you might be to close to register via normal means. I think the recommended time to register is 1 month before the warranty runs out.

Sandy: I wasn't sure what you meant by "Clamshell mode" until I read Felix's response. I've not done that with my MBP. If I connect to an external LCD, I turn off the laptop's LCD.
 
Quick question about apple care and apple warranty in general. How fast are they on repairs and what can you upgrade without voiding it? Also can you drop it off at an apple store or how does the warranty work?

You can upgrade the ram and that's about it with the MB's. Opening the case to put in a larger HDD is apparently in violation of the warranty. Also, if you aren't near an apple store, they'll overnight you a DHL box and you'll either have a new machine or a fixed one by the end of the week (assuming you sent it out on a monday).
 
Yeah I had awesome experiences with AppleCare on my MacBook, they even asked ME if I wanted a fully new one, they offered it to me instead of taking the time to repair the one I had sent in.. totally worth it.

Upgrading the hard drive is covered with the warranty on the MacBooks, not the MacBook Pros.
 
Oh yeah, little note on that, I had self upgraded my RAM and HDD to 2GB and 160GB, and now Apple has those with my old notebook, ALWAYS take a full backup before you mail it in, I did, and it really helped me get everything set back up when I got the new one in the mail.
 
Get it. Any repairs after the fact will cost far more than the extended warranty.
