Earlier today Apple held its annual developer conference and as usual used the keynote address to announce all of the new software features coming to Apple’s many products this Fall...Apple has also updated the naming scheme of its operating systems, changing their designation from the order in which they were released to the year they'll largely be in use...so instead of iOS 19, the latest version is called iOS 26, since the software will be available throughout 2026

iOS 26 marks a dramatic shift in design and functionality...the update is set to launch later this year, and will share the general design language inspired by visionOS...the new "Liquid Glass" interface introduces a clean, transparent aesthetic that looks different and behaves differently...from redesigned app icons to floating toolbars and translucent layers, iOS 26 delivers a modern, unified look across the system...

I feel like there's a reason UIs moved away from transparent everything. If only I could put my finger on it. Nope, can't think of a reason. This is beautiful UI and it's definitely not comparable to applying sandpaper directly to my corneas.
 
Not a fan. Reminds me of ios7 and windows aero. Not sure what is wrong with the current style. They need to focus on improving AI integration features, not stupid cosmetic shit.

My hunch is that Apple tweaks some elements by release to make them more readable, like it did with iOS 7.
 
I'm actually stunned they went with this. Saw some blog make a mockup of what they imagined it might be last week and I thought, 'there's no way Apple would regress the UI like that'. Ironically that mockup was *better* than Apple's actual design for the icons specifically.

This type of no background fill styling is the type of thing one saw from DeviantArt GUIs circa 2010. Before Apple had figured out that frosted translucent backgrounds would be a solution to providing background/foreground separation (which they've almost entirely ditched for this new Liquid design).
 
Don’t know why Samsung drags themselves in the dirt like that. It’s not a good look. Just shut up when someone else is doing something stupid.

I miss when companies didn't use social media for trolling and didn't sound like teens on twitter.

I like ios26 so far, its a lot snappier and contrast is good in general for most of it, the pull down control panel sucks because they don't darken the background enough.

I mean it's a new phone os, those have never felt like OMG this is amazing! when i was on ios or android. Most OS updates would come with some battery drain issue that needs patched lol.
 
The iPadOS update is the largest update as far as I'm concerned. An actual windowing interface (with a menu bar)! Better file management! Long-running background tasks! I don't know if we're yet at the point where many more people can replace their laptops, but it feels like Apple just got a lot closer.

It's also fascinating to see Apple effectively take the opposite approach to Microsoft when it comes to tablets. Microsoft is still trying to adapt a desktop OS to tablets; Apple is giving a tablet OS desktop-level features. Apple took forever to get here, but iPadOS 26 looks like it's doing a better job interface-wise than Windows 11.

It looks fantastic! I can't wait to turn it off.... but then it's Apple, probably won't be able to.
 
Thank Goodness i don' t have to worry about ios 26 this year. Y'all test it out and report all the bugs so it'll be ready to go for me in the fall of 26. :D
 
If you want a good phone try it out on Retail level then check the brightness slider if you can dim it really low it's a good phone. Was playing around with the phones today in electronics trying to figure out why my Samsung A26 I bought a week ago was giving me woes at work it's a AMOLED phone. I think I figured it out my Desktop Monitor was too dark along with using Warm colors on the Phone and too low of brightness. I'll see what happens when I goto work on Thursday but I think I have it figured out part of the problem is I wear glasses that are really scratched up.
 
How do people think live translation work ? Image playground, Visual intelligence, notification prioritization, deep fusion image processing, faceID, when you write text when your finger interpretation, next word suggestion, Siri, background noise filtering, etc... on those phone ?

I feel for a lot of people, the buzzword is what irk, they do not mind FSR 4 use neural network they would mind if someone call it AI...

I think he is a bit wrong about the local inference being faster, maybe for large data/very small model situation (DLSS/image, noise processing), but in general internet latency is very small versus going at 250-1000token/second on a super computer versus 15-30 locally... and running much better models as well.

All I care about is how much of a batter hit is this going to cause because the GPU is working harder? If I can disable this, I will.

No doubt within a year or two Samsung will have the glass UI following their trend of making fun of Apple for something, then doing the exact same thing 2 years later. (Even if it’s an ancient UI from the 00’s.)
 
Transparency in a UI is almost always a pain in the ass (in my opinion). Every time I deal with it I just find my eyes having a harder time focusing on what I'm trying to focus on while this muddy mess in the background is a distraction.

Tried the transparency theme honestly it just causes me to take an extra second to find the app i want to launch. With color I can find them very quickly. The transparency in the folders looks okay, the control panel is awful. Needs more blurring effect to be usable IMO.

I dunno, IOS 'announcements' really don't impress me much and I do enjoy my iphones.

I just wish they wouldn't be so excited announcing things like it's the first time the world has seen such a feature.

Well that's the kind of innovation I expect from a multi-trillion dollar tech titan like Apple! Icons I can barely see! What an exciting product cycle!

My feeling is that Apple will tweak the tinting/opacity so that it's more readable by launch. Remember, the iOS 7 Apple previewed and the one people ultimately got had some visible changes.

Oh for sure. I think they should have had a better handle on it considering it was one of the main points of the OS announcement. And they KNEW screenshots would follow the dev beta release. Functionally for me it runs well and much better than previous first beta releases so that is refreshing.

I guess having it run well is a better priority.
 
Phone hardware transition to commodity is going to be a bit painful.. they will try hard to make thing that could run on the cloud locally just to create an incentive to continue to update them, but I am not sure if it will work.

I just got a Galaxy A56. It's a significant upgrade from my A35, nearly as fast as my S22 Ultra was, and less than half price (admittedly I got it for $399 instead of the estimated $499 it's supposed to cost when generally released, as I got the global version from Micro Center.) Specifically, 3D gaming is a lot faster. It's also got 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, which is 50% and 100% more than the A35, A36, and A55 defaulted to. The only thing I miss is the stylus and DeX.

I had a similar experience with the Pixel 9a. It's fast for the money, takes excellent photos (even compared to some higher-end phones), lasts ages on battery, and boasts a good display outside of the thicker-than-usual bezels. It's so close to the regular Pixel 9 that I can't actually recommend the higher-end model unless it's heavily discounted... and even then, I'd probably wait for the Pixel 10.

There are still reasons to buy higher-end phones, but they're increasingly reserved for the people who know they'll want that last 10% increase in quality. I prefer flagships because I need the best cameras for my work (particularly telephotos) and often want the latest chip and display tech. But most people would honestly be better-served by a Pixel 9a, a Galaxy A56, or another mid-ranger.

So one other point about the A56 in particular, but applies probably to other phones in general. You've been able to order the Global/Latin American version of the A56 since it was released globally in March, but Amazon listings say "only works on AT&T/T-Mobile". The version I have, which I am pretty sure is the same one, (About says it's the A566E/DS, but I can't find the full thing with the several extra letters). Says "no Verizon". But this is, I think, a legacy of the 3G networks, and for 4G and 5G (remembering that the 3G networks are shut down finally in the US) they don't use different technology, so the Micro Center one, at least, definitely works on Verizon. I'm not willing to spend the money on the Amazon version, but for anyone on VZ who might have an interest in this phone, well, the MC version absolutely works.

I'm not sure what the difference between the Global and International versions, if any, are, but some sites, like Kimovil, that list band compatibility, list them separately.)
