If you haven't heard of the "tension" between Apple and Google over the past few months, you must have been living under the proverbial rock. Well if you haven't this article brings you up to speed and then some.

It looked like the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

<eagerly awaits, anti-google ads on youtube>

But I thought Steve jobs agrees that good artists copy and great artists steal, and he has always been shameless about stealing? So how can he sue for someone stealing vague ideas from him? It's not like they are making bootleg iPhones and trying to pass them off as Apple iPhones. More BS from the same company that tried to trademark the letter i.

Steve says he steals:

from article said:
“We did not enter the search business. They entered the phone business,” Mr. Jobs told Apple employees during an all-hands meeting shortly after the public introduction of the iPad in January, according to two employees who were there and heard the presentation. “Make no mistake: Google wants to kill the iPhone. We won’t let them.”

That makes me laugh. Apple entered the phone business when Motorola, Palm, Blackberry and Nokia already dominated that market. Did anyone whine like this? Apple entered the portable media player business when there were other players already dominating it. Did Apple slow down and let the other manufacturer keep up? No, then destroyed them.

Now Google's giving them a small taste of what they're doing to others, and Jobs whine about Google penetrating their market.

Apple makes good products, but sometimes Jobs need to shut his mouth and let the market play itself out. Let the consumer vote with their wallet.

Typo on my last post. Should read "No, they destroyed them."

At the heart of their dispute is a sense of betrayal: Mr. Jobs believes that Google violated the alliance between the companies by producing cellphones that physically, technologically and spiritually resembled the iPhone. In short, he feels that his former friends at Google picked his pocket.

This is the same dude that said "Good artists copy, great artists steal"? Shouldn't he be applauding them rather than condemning them?

what boggles my mind here is that they DIDN'T see this coming. They have completely different business models, Google is open and wide, Apple narrow and closed. Google needs everyone to be using their products or at least making use of them. Apple is proprietary and does not want anyone adding things (outside their control) and is about 180 from open source that you can get.

The reason Apple is bitchy is because Google is going right after their core market, and ramping up to do a much better job of it. That market would be the people who want a smartphone as a toy. The iPhone only sort of competes against other smartphones. The thing with smartphones prior to the iPhone is that they were either targeted at business type users (like Blackberry) or as geek toys (like most Windows Mobile). Well and good, there's plenty of people in those categories. However there's also people who aren't and are more likley to use a smartphone as a toy, but it has to be nice and shiny and friendly.

Well that's what the iPhone has got. So while it didn't make massive inroads against existing smartphones, it did get a new userbase who wasn't interested in smartphones before.

That is what Google threatens. They are trying to offer the shiny, friendly smartphone as well, but without all the shit Apple wants you to take. So they threaten not to just be another smartphone, but to be one that goes after Apple's core market.

Good for them I say.

Reasons like this is why I like Windows. Open enough to have anything on the market to be used, yet closed JUST ENOUGH to attract developers to an easy to use unified driver architecture (open gl versus directx, devs use directx due to the unified driver architecture among other things). Linux can still modify your OS alot better, but Windows 7 is a move in the right direction for that on Windows.

I find it amazing (not to mention hilarious) that in this day and age Apple cultists bash Windows while buying their next useless 1984 console.

How can you say its a useless console man? How are you going to accesorize to match an ugly dell laptop at starbucks while you sip your 3$ latte and write your screenplay?

apple can go suck eggs..it can sink.. let the App$letanic sink, and good bloody riddance.

i mean, we have the gs16gb for 799 and if you wanted the 32gb version it costs near 1400 outright here in aus.. i mean, its only a memory double, apple goes yup its double therefore price is double... huh????

go google go google

it will force apple to cheapen their products.

If in Australia, Google droid phones are priced the way they are in the US, then your complaining about nothing, I agree that the 32GB iPhone is outside of most peoples wallets, but the 16 is exactly the same price as the droid comparisons (not including cost of contract and other toot, that should be free), unfortunately the manufacturers insist on limiting their sales with competitive service companies, so one has the stuff you want, but ridiculous additional fees, and the other one has the alternative with other fees that are just as insane, now if they were being sold by the same service providers I would be more interested....not that manufacturers listen to what the customers want.

so basically google is pulling a microsoft on apple. (what ms did for pc's; google is doing for phones)
