If you were kicking around the idea of getting Apple TV, you might want to read this first.

Apple TV can display HD, but there is almost no such content available. Apple claims "near DVD" quality for iTunes movies, but they don't come close to DVD images. ITunes TV shows all look a bit blurry, not even matching standard broadcast quality. The bigger and better your display, the worse it will look.

I got my first hands on experience with Apple TV this week through a friend and the first thing out of my mouth was "what's wrong with your picture?" The list of limitations (no downloading to the Apple TV, no streaming video, etc. etc.) is longer than the list of features.

Kind of a bummer, I was excited to see it...at first. :(

It's pretty useless for anyone really serious about PC->TV integrations...
and the iTunes movies limitations just make me cringe :(

But there are talks of hacks already... things like getting it to play XVids, etc...
So, a tiny set top box, with a custom linux (MythTV? :D ) couldn't be bad at all...

Haha, I want to see that other guy come post here who posted so aggressively defending this that I almost called him an Apple Zealot.

Can you download Quicktime High Definition trailers and play it on the Apple TV?

I am a gadget guy, I loves me some gadgets. I am NOT an Apple fan but I am an iPod owner (video and nano) and obviously my job almost necessitates that I be a gadget freak. So, my buddy who works for a local Mac reseller calls me over to see his "shiny new gadget".

I was not kidding when I said that the first thing out of my mouth when I saw his 42" Aquos was "what’s wrong with your TV". It looked like ass.

Now, maybe I am spoiled on high-def. The PS3 and the 360 have all but killed my taste for anything in standard def…and that could be part of the problem, but I am telling you…TV shows looked baaaad on the big screen. The same movies that look fantastic on my iPod video looked sub-DVD mediocre on the TV. Even though it doesn’t make sense, maybe standard def TVs would be fine, I don’t know.

And yes, if you play around with it, rip your DVDs to MPEG4 etc. etc. etc. you can get it to work but WHY? We are talking about living rooms here. Am I really going to go through the hassle of ripping a DVD so I can watch it on the Apple TV when I can lean over and put the DVD in the DVD player?

Logo on the box is missing something though:

Heh. Don't be. I have a Video iPod and I like it a lot. An iPod is practical though. There's little need for an Apple TV. Maybe if you're on a laptop or your monitor sucks. How much does it cost again?

It's all going to make perfect sense when you see the new 1" AppleTV Nano... introduced 1 month after AppleTV goes GA.
