Can somone explain what I'm missing? Why do we need a JB for the ATV3? It doesnt have enough storage to load videos directly, it's 1080p, and with Airplay I can stream anything I want off my Jailbroken iPad/iPhone (or even off my MBP or PC)... What's really that great about a JB for ATV3? (outside of the "because I want more control over my device" which is really just a philosophical discussion)
The ability to stream from a NAS for one. I dislike having to leave a computer running all the time with an instance of iTunes with my ATV3. I had 2 first gen ATV's that had music on them. Having to have iTunes running somewhere is a step backwards in my opinion.
This. All I want is to connect to my whs2011.
I'm pretty happy with airplay - it works pretty seamlessly with the rest of my devices - macbook pro, ipad2 and iphones. I still hate that I have to leave a mac mini running headless in the basement serving music content to it, but I got tired of waiting for a jailbreak.

Theres not much of a practical alternative at this point. The Apple TV is all part of being in an Apple eco-system. It benefits most from those who own multiple Apple products. Even multiple ATV's.
And all those products need be on the same page, thus a centralized library is the most logical solution.
Also while the original ATV having a harddrive was nice at the time, I honestly don't know what I would put on my ATV3 if it did have a local harddrive. Video has gotten substantially larger since the original ATV. If they put a 200 or 300GB harddrive in it it wouldn't really hold all that much, maybe 30-40 movies if your lucky. They could put a 1TB or 2TB but then you start getting into the problem of data loss. Where as RAID or even traditional backup is very affordable now on almost any computer.
I am in the process of converting our movies to iTunes, and I'm up to 2.5TB and I only have about 280 TV episodes and 300 Movies. I sure as hell don't want to loose that so I have RAID5.
Plus how are you going to rip all that data and edit Metadata when its all on an Apple TV? You know Apple won't let you just access the data any old way you want. They will sandwall it.
For me the best beneift of the ATV is that it pulls everything locally from iTunes, like everything else in my house.
But if you wanted this then why would you get an Apple TV in the first place?

Because it's about the cheapest way to run XBMC. Despite XBMC being a little sluggish with my 800+ library, I couldn't ask for more from my ATV2. I can leave it on 24/7 and it barely consumes any power. The Netflix interface doesn't totally suck like a Wii or my parents Vizio internet TV.
I could put a cheap video card in an old machine to get h.264 acceleration, but by the time I bought that and a remote I've almost spent as much as an ATV. Then it's going to be huge, power hungry, and hot and still not be able to play Netflix unless I want to run Windows (which I don't).
I can't wait for a JB for the ATV3. We need another since my wife bought me a new TV for the bedroom for my bday.
Don't hold your breath. It has almost no attack surface. It will happen eventually, but more than likely as the result of an Apple software update for it that inadvertently exposes more functionality or access to other parts of the system.
Because I needed a present for my wife for our anniversary
She had used her sister's ATV2 with airplay and liked that feature, so I bought an ATV3 for the 1080p capabilities and airplay. I have an external hard drive attached to my router that has a backup of all of my music and was hoping to just stream from it, but that is not the case. I now have a mac mini serving content to it, but it seems quite silly to have to have iTunes running on a computer to serve it content.
