I'm sort of surprised this hasn't gotten a mention here.

for about what you pay for some VIA and less than a desktop mobile-cpu rig, it's a completely open (as in hackery) 1ghz dothan with 256mb of ram and a geforce 7 series. (2 or 4 pipe though), supposedly plays 720p x.264 fine, somehow.

Linux and OS X are running in full on it with some very minor hacks. OS X is even legal to run on it, being apple hardware, Windows XP and vista soon to come.

also has IR sensor and HDMI+optical out as the default
 
I was looking at this but dont fully understand it.
What i dont get does it actually have a built in HD tv tuner?
How fast is the thing?

Im building a home theater pc and well its gonna be ALOT bigger then that thing. That is one small peice of... computer. Really nice looking too.

I just think you can do ALOT more with a build pc one. I wanna be able to have some SNES, NES and N64 emulators and stuff running on it to play. Plus you need ALOT bigger hardrives!.
Im thinking this apple is good for secondary home theater computers. First you need a good one for storage and to send all information around. Maybe buying one for your room or something.
 
Needs room for a slim-dvd + riser card. Are they really arrogant enough to believe you will download everything from iTunes? Apple has an annoying tendecy to sacrifice necessary functions for cuteness. They go too far. They would do so much better if they included essential features. They just need to charge less for their MacMini, when you can buy a Pandora for <$250.
 
Yeah, i agree with the limitations, so far as being tempted to return mine.

but for the price, it's very respectable hardware, and with a USB hub, you can put external media and tuners on it once mythtv is fully up.
 
It has nothing to do with arrogance, the point of AppleTV is to be an appliance that fits into your network to stream media and store some things locally. Thus why it doesn't have the CD/DVD drive to load media since your fully functional computer (and I'm sure Apple would like it to be a Mac) should have it. It's not meant to be a PC, it's not meant to replace a PC and it's not in Apple's interests to add an optical drive to the system when you aren't able to rip DVDs with native Apple applications and they want you to buy music and movies from the iTunes store.

It's an Apple media extender, that's it. If you want to do something more than that, sure you're are going to need to build it yourself.
 
I think I am gonna get one asap, hack it and run Mac os or XP. Like the other posters said, its perfect for media and emulation, and for the price and package its really hard to beat.
 
have anyone actually played with one of these at the store?

i thought it kind of sucked...nothing killer that GBPVR or Mediaportal doesn't already do...
