Are we taking bets on what the excuses will be at tomorrow's press conference? How about the remedy? I’m putting my money on free bumper cases for everyone.

Apple Inc. said it will hold a press conference on Friday to discuss the latest iPhone model, which has been beset by complaints about its antenna.

I predict Steve Jobs going on stage and asking for questions, then putting his fingers in his ears and going "LALALALALALALA I can't hear you." as the crowd asks him questions.

Avoid the problem and announce free bumpers and that the white iphone is for sale. press conference over.

Bloomberg reporting someone "in the know" says Apple's main antenna engineer, Ruben Caballero, basically told Jobs and others in the past that the redesigned antenna layout was going to fuck things up... looks like they may have found a scapegoat, perhaps?

Apple's never done a "press conference" so, I would doubt Steve Jobs would even be there, probably a bunch of flunkies, lawyers, and marketing Appholes...

But it'll be interesting, regardless. :D

If they give out $3 dollar bumper cases for free with $40 billion in the bank, I would return my phone, and they would not be allowed to ask questions. This is ridiculous. I personally would never own one, but the way Apple is (not) handling this is obsurd.

There are going to be a bunch of hypnotist and they will hypnotize the whole crowd so they think there is no problem... and that it's just a phone

As has already been noted on several financial sites, the cost of this fiasco on the stock price has already cost them 3x more than giving Bumpers out 10x over... so tomorrow will be very interesting indeed.

The guy that leaked to Bloomberg is going to get his door kicked in now and warrants served regarding Apple Trade secrets.

Yup. I bet they barely even mention the thought of the antenna issue, just - "Oh hey by the way, if you've been having signal issues as a result of AT&T's coverage, here's a slick new bumper, available now!"

So I was looking up this Ruben Caballero guy and found that he owns the patent for antennas for handheld electronic devices with conductive bezels, and Apple is using a bezel antenna from what I can find.

[0006]A typical antenna may be fabricated by patterning a metal layer on a circuit board substrate or may be formed from a sheet of thin metal using a foil stamping process. Many devices use planar inverted-F antennas (PIFAs). Planar inverted-F antennas are formed by locating a planar resonating element above a ground plane. These techniques can be used to produce antennas that fit within the tight confines of a compact handheld device. With conventional handheld electronic devices, however, design compromises are made to accommodate compact antennas. These design compromises may include, for example, compromises related to antenna height above the ground plane, antenna efficiency, and antenna bandwidth. Moreover, constraints are often placed on the amount of metal that can be used in a handheld device and on the location of metal parts. These constraints can adversely affect device operation and device appearance.

a bumper is unacceptable! i bought an iphone to look cool, not to cover it up with an ugly bumper!

Bumpers DO NOT help. My wife and I both have iPhone 4s and both have bumpers. The problem isn't that bad but the bumpers made zero difference. I you don't believe me I can post videos on YouTube with and without.

Well, they'll be holding the press conference soon...let's just hope the hold it the right way or they might lose signal and no one will know why they held a press conference.:D

Well, if that's true, it helps prove Apple knew about this issue even before selling unit #1.

No, it does. The issue is skin contact with the antenna, which the bumper prohibits.
It DOES NOT fix the issue. It's slapping a bandaid on the problem.
Fixing the issue is coating the antennas, relocating them, etc- things of this nature.

LMAO, yea I forgot about the white iPhone, but I'd imagine the announcement of that will get plenty of attention, "We have created a revolutionary and innovative new color..."

IPhones have issues. Android isn't ready for prime time. What's a good alternative?

Context, Techie. Context.

I have a Samsung Moment with Android 2.1 and it's very buggy and convoluted to use. Kinda like a bunch of snagged designed it and are beta testing it on the public. My dad has the HTC Evo 4g and it's about the same.

Announce a little silver sticky they're going to give out for free you can put over the effected area. Bumper would cost more to Apple then is acceptable. Oh and they are going to play the issue down.

I got my iPhone Monday, it has a manufacture week 27 and I am not experiencing the issues with the antenna or the proximity sensor. I can make the signal go down but not drop if I death-grip the phone very unnaturally, I was able to replicate this on my iPhone 3gs, and a Nexus 1 as well. People are reporting that they're receiving week 27 builds now when they're exchanging theirs.

Overall I'm enjoying the phone for its basic functionality, I'm waiting eagerly for a jailbreak to give it the functionality I'm used to with my old model.

How does one determine their phone's build week?
