Is anyone else surprised at the lack of updates/info from Apple on their nextgen monitor?

I would have assumed with Mac Pro, they would have bundled a new version of the monitor.

FFS Apple, take my money and show me an update!

4K Thunderbolt 2 display is coming, but it's not ready yet...

And if it's anything like the launch last one, it'll only be a couple hundred more to get an entire computer built into the back of it as an iMac.

I don't see the next iMac being 4K, personally. Maybe in a very high-end new 30" model or something. If Apple plans to release 4K TV sets late next year as rumored, they need to keep 4K as a Pro/Luxury level item at least until those enter the market. 2015 for a 4K iMac would be my gut feeling right now.

This has no backing, but I could see Apple offering two levels (or more) of monitors, akin to a line-up they had many, many years ago before they consolidated it to one. I don't see offering a 4K only display is going to happen at this point in time, due to costs (unless they opt to go with an el' cheapo panel, which I don't see happening).

Apple kept talking up 4K support with the Mac Pro, so I see them offering a 4K display at the high end and on the lower end, one of those "Ultra HD" high density panels, similar to what Dell has announced just recently.

I thought the 4K display talk was more geared for Apple TV and not necessarily for PC/desktop use.

Either way, I'm hoping the nextgen monitor from Apple will lower the Thunderbolt Display price point or will just look for an alternative for hooking up my MBP.

Apple will definitely release a 4k monitor in the next year. It's just a matter of time. They didn't spend all this time touting how the new Mac Pro is capable of driving 3 4K displays only to not capture a part of that market.

I agree with synergyo1 that Apple will more than likely start offering tiers of displays again, similar to the original 20" 24" 27" offered before but instead more focused on resolution than size.

I imagine that the Thunderbolt Display will get updated into a super thin version, like the current iMac, and then they'll make a 4k 30-32" Display to capture the video production and high end graphics/art market. The big question is, what is the price going to be? Dell's 4k monitor is coming in at over $5K. I imagine that Eizo and NEC will be around there as well.
