Apple Software Push Installs Unnecessary Software

The point is, it's not just Apple who attempts to install extra crap onto your computer. Programs for Windows and OS X do this.

What's the problem here?

I've never seen a piece of software from anyone other then Apple try to install multiple unrelated pieces of software on an auto-update.

Apple's tactics are right up there with your average malware provider.

Back when AOL started doing this... Ver. 3.0 I think, is when I quit using it.

So any bitching at Sun? Because every time a new java version comes out the installer wants to install Yahoo Toolbar, which IMO is unnecessary software.
They also install a Firefox add-on without your consent. Microsoft does the same damn thing (installing add-ons to your unaffiliated third-party software without even notifying you), but they don't get any flack for it.

Now, Apple leaves checkboxes for Safari ticked by default that you're free to uncheck...WHY, SIR, THAT IS ATROCIOUS!

I was saying the apple software update was trying to push me to install the iphone utility itunes etc. not windows. I also must have missed the part where I could check a box not to install the update software. Funny thing tho I installed QT months ago and I'm just recently getting the annoying apple pop up.

I don't understand this "it tried to push me" thing. I always figured it asking to install other stuff was the norm? Kinda like when I choose to download Windows Live Mail, it asks if I also want to get Picture Gallery, Movie Maker, etc. I simply select "no". Same with the Apple stuff. Come on, some of you are acting like Apple is doing something SOOOO shady here, when in fact it's just you overreacting.

Actually MS caught a ton of shit for the .NET Framework add-on. Thus why they patched it to allow it to be easily uninstalled.

This particular issue aside (I know nothing about it), I will say this is an increasingly annoying trend with Apple.

You can't just install iTunes. You end up with all kinds of crap. Quicktime, Bonjour, Safari, Apple Update Manger, etc... And there is no custom install option to delete these options.

Just what a Corporate Laptop needs.

Personally, even though I like iTunes, I've started using Media Monkey to avoid all this.

Yes you can... minus the Quicktime part, because Quicktime isn't just a program, it's the API/backend for how iTunes does all of it's media related functions, it's a big codec pack basically.

You can skip out on Bonjour, you can skip out on Safari, you can uninstall the software updater program, etc..

I'll give it that it's annoying that you have to uncheck certain boxes or go through the process of removing certain software after the fact, but unless you just click next without reading anything, you'll end up with some value-add software they think you'll like.

CCleaner does this, nobody bitches about it, other programs too, go figure, software companies do this all the time with Yahoo fucking toolbar, no I don't want you, go the fuck away!

Perhaps part of the problem is that it is listed as an update, rather than a new application like Safari, et. al. is listed as. People have been trained to always install updates to their software for security reasons. So when they see that an update is available, they install it.

Instead of an update, they get a new application, which installs a web server...not exactly nice behaviour.
