Apple retina display 5120x2880

That would be some amazing monitor if true. I'm sure Retina technology would be incorporated somehow into Mac's monitors in some sort of line outside of the phone and tablet.

Guess we'll wait and see.

It's not really a technology, it's just some stupid term Apple made up for a 960 x 640 resolution display.

See how well that Apple marketing machine functions?!? :p
In this case:
1. Take something everyone knows and sounds futuristic. (in movies we used to call stuff you'd implant or project directly into the eyes a retina display... )
2. Use it for your product making it sound special.
3. Claim you invented something. (although it's made by a different company, and everyone knew it'll come to market at some point)

The basic idea behind naming it this way is that the pixel size is smaller than the resolution of the retina of your eyes when viewed at typical distance.

For those wondering what the fuss is about when putting higher resolutions on medium size displays:
It's the overdue move towards resolution independence which starts to be possible with the OS scaling properly and the pixel density being developed in consumer volume for the mobile market.
Seeing a sub-pixel isn't a good thing and we only put up with it because we're used to it...
Monitors "should" look as clean as a glowing printed piece of paper without all the distracting fuzzy red green blue dots and black stripes in between.
So it's no longer about fitting more information on the display it's about making the information look as clean as possible.
Especially if you focus on the small white text on this page you'll notice how bad the stuff we currently have looks compared to a printed book, the only reason we need anti aliasing is that all the current monitors suck when compared to our eyes resolution.

I hope we will get "retina" resolution displays soon, and thankfully it's something Apple can not buy away from the market to make it exclusive (like Fingerworks touchpads...) and stall technological development.
So even for those disliking apple it's a welcome development that will get things rolling on all platforms, but the name might stick around for a long time ... '''OTL
