In a move that surprised many in the industry, Apple has requested that EPEAT pull the certification on 39 Apple products from its list of green products. Apple offered no explanation for the move to de-certify its products.

“They were important supporters and we are disappointed that they don’t want their products measured by this standard anymore.”

When you glue and/or solder every component into your product it kind of makes it impossible to remain green certified. Though it is a weird step by Apple to ask for de-certification on all their products, as their are some that are technically still certifiable.

Wow, that's actually pretty cool of Apple.

I hate hearing about "go green".

I bet the money they save on non-green components and packaging doesn't translate into a price drop on said products.

^I don't see why. It's a good thing. Though, it's stupid if people shove that crap down your throat.

You saying that 'green' requires some 3rd party chips in it?

Also "We didn't like it cause customers were getting their stuff repaired at stores, or buying parts online for 10% the cost we charge, this is a fucking outrage! We demand that all money come to us and ONLY to us!"

So its pretty much official, Apple is like buying a car, that you are only allowed to get repaired at Apple.

The whole green fad is stupid and hipster anyways.

On the other hand, I wouldn't expect a company like Apple (who is basically the definition of Hipster) to do a move like that.

The ability to safely and easily break a product down to its components for safe disposal and/or recycling is the primary requirement for green certification.

It seems to me that the bigger Apple gets the less they give a shit about anything.

At this point they can literally do whatever they want without recourse.

I don't mind the hipsterism of green fad to actually lead to products that are 'efficient'. Frankly, the right way to manufacture is to make products recyclable, self-serviceable, easy to dispose and consume as little energy in manufacturing as possible.

@Parmenides, leeletherwood: what is worse than the green fad here is the fact that removing batteries from the recent iPad means risking contaminants from the batteries becoming exposed to the environment. It is one thing to buy into the greenwash, but a whole other when you make stuff that are designed to be non-serviceable.

Apple at least are not being hypocritical by having withdrawn from EPEAT, but that doesn't mean I like how Apple have chosen to engineer their stuff.

No, Freedom is awesome. Having some idiot nag you to recycle everytime you go to the dump is fucking annoying.

Freedom practically does such, as it doesn't mean mean you can do whatever the fuck you want. France tried that before, and after Robespierre, they kinda went back to aristocracy and shit... and tried again with that whole Paris Commune nonsense, but you know how that went.

agreed that the "green" movement is a bunch of crap.

So I'm supposed to recycle an perfectly good ipad because the battery was sealed with satan's key?

Apple locking down every nut and bolt of their hardware means that instead of popping in a brand new battery in 5 seconds, you throw away an ENTIRE device just so it will look pretty and without "lines" while you sip your 5 dollar coffee.

What good is saving a few batteries when you have to crank out a few extra ipads *and* batteries to replace one single defective part?

/BS in Economics degree here -- I get a hard on for efficiency. Apple has NONE.

Technically, they make more money. 2 Ipads sold is > 1 Ipad and 1 battery sold.

Wow- that's really bad when put that way... True, as well.

In being "green" they're actually promoting more wastefulness than the majority of the market. (Though most tablets and ultrabooks nowadays seem to have soldered-in batteries for some reason)

http://ifixit.org/2884/apple-ditches-green-standard-cuts-off-federal-agencies-from-apple-products/

ifixit agrees in part it has to do with them gluing down and soldering stuff that doesn't need to be.

Not necessarily the EXISTENCE of glue as much as their USAGE of glue:
the standard lays out particular requirements for product “disassemble-ability,” a very important consideration for recycling: “External enclosures, chassis, and electronic subassemblies shall be removable with commonly available tools or by hand.” Electronics recyclers need to take out hazardous components such as batteries before sending computers through their shredders, because batteries can catch fire when punctured.

I think their summary says it well:
despite the costs, design supersedes the environment.

They'd rather eliminate an entire (quite large) customer base than add a couple screws to their design.

Exactly , who gives a shit about pollution , fucking people who want to keep the climate stable and all that.

Seriously, Apple can do no wrong. They could make all their products out of Chinese babies and people wouldn't bat an eye over it, just as long as it looked cool.

How, as Apple is always continuously hated on and targeted?

you'd still look like a massive ass driving down the street in that thing. It would be the os eqv of a prius

DeLorean-DMC-12.jpg

Are you kidding me? That's awesome!

I would drive a back to the future delorean until the wheels fell off.
+1

Semantics, apparently since this vehicle doesn't come with any Grey Puopon and Russian caviar, I guess it wouldn't fit your tastes. :p

I'm sorry maybe i didn't convey it right, you're the guy who tricked out a honda, but at the end of the day you're still driving in a shitty honda that you just added shit to. All it says to me is i like a really impractical car just because i shat all over it with custom crap.

Apparently Linux users have just recently gained the ability to post large, annoying pictures in forum threads and are still a little over-excited about this new capability.

No, it's still a DeLorean, a time traveling, awesome-sauce DeLorean.
You're the kind of guy who shits comments over what everyone else drives, regardless of their needs and wants, because, you know, your opinion is the end-all-be-all of opinions.

I will try to find smaller pics next time. :)

Apple isn't green? Maybe the glue they use to hold batteries in place contains lead and asbestos or something.

It could very well be organic horse glue. That's eco-conscious, right?

Don't horses eat grass and stuff? They destroy the environment by eating things and dropping their waste everywhere so they can't possibly be green.
