Should I be leary of getting one? I have never ordered a refurb anything from apple. I don't know their policy. Does it come with a warranty or am I going to buy like a $300 coverage plan?

From what I hear, sometimes the refurbs are BETTER than new. Often you will get a free HD upgrade (more space) or extra ram.

I've never heard anyone to be unhappy with theirs.

You can get a new C2D base for $1599 with the ACD program. That's what I got mine for.

ACD program? Explain please.

It's the Apple Developer program. If you sign up for it (minimum $99 fee, depending on membership type) you get a discount off any new system.

My refurb MacBook Pro had a 100GB HD instead of an 80GB, but it had a bad optical drive and some stripped screw holes in the top case. It was all fixed under warranty, I saved money and I got a bigger HD. I was happy in the end.

Usually only $100 more than the educational discount, sometimes less. So unless you want the discount, you're paying money to save the same amount you'd spend (essentially spending nothing).

Or so that was the case when I got my iBook back in 02.

EDIT: MacBook Pro you get $400 off, guess it's changed.

one year warranty, 90 days phone support. i just got Applecare on my MBP though, in my opinion, it's worth it.

Yeah, you can buy it within the first year of your free (included) warranty.

so gloss or no gloss or just wait for macbook core duo 2s hrmmmm

go with the gloss. the main problem seem to assert with the glossy screens is well, they're glossy and that they can't use it in certain lighting... then again, the exact same lighting that prohibits use of glossy prohibits the use of matte screens too...

I got rid of my vaio cause it could get hot enough to melt cheese on crackers with it. How hot do these things get on your lap? and what do you get with the 2.16 for battery life? Why is it some refurbs are more than others on macs site I dont get it.

macs run hot.
You mean macs have poor cooling. Don't sugar coat a problem just cause it's a mac doesn't seem like an excuse.

...Maybe you're misinterpreting what I said.

"Macs run hot."

...yep, not seeing the sugarcoating. The fact is that they run hot. You asked about how hot it gets on your lap, I said macs run hot, which implies that it will be hot on your lap.

You made an assumption and now you just look like an ass.

I forgot to add that my sister has had issues with purchasing apple refurbs. Only related to ipods tho. One was DOA, second(replacement) was physically cracked and foggy, 3rd(replacement) was great. So i guess in the end you get a heck of a deal, but you may end up paying for it in complications / time.

nah I picked up on the poor excuse for sarcasm and I made fun of it, I feel fine.

"Macs run hot" means that your Mac will get hot when it runs. No sugar coating there.

"Macs have poor cooling" means they have poor cooling. Whether or not this means they run hot depend entirely on the amount of energy they use. My iBook, for example, has pretty shitty cooling. Yet it doesn't exactly run hot, because it doesn't use much energy. A Pentium 4XE laptop would melt even with excellent cooling.

See what I'm getting at? :)
