Apple Loses Another Unreleased iPhone

I have a strong feeling that you're probobly right. Would a lead box prevent signals from going in/out?

Just HOLDING it will prevent signals from going in/out! Remember, we ARE talking bout an iPhone here!

People who own Apple devices always seem to feel the urge to show them off. They put it on the table, hold it in their hands, etc. with no reason. Or maybe their jeans are too skinny.

Its cause the screens are so damn fragile sitting down with one in your pocket is a death sentence for them

I wish I was kidding, but I hear about people breaking their phones displays like mad, hell my brother has his display broken on his cheap phone

Its shitty, but what can you do other then NOT buy the crappy products, but for every willful smart consumer that stays away from crap, 100 take his place and buy whatever is the newest niche thing

Yes, a cage made of very fine ferrous material screen mesh will block the signals.
....so would rolling it up in tinfoil and folding the ends over....blocking cell phone signals isn't that tough.

Marketing ploy? Kind of brutal if it is, but for the same thing to happen twice it raises suspicions.

For those wondering about the location, the phones built in GPS and the Find my iPhone feature which all iPhone 4 and iPad 2 and higher devices come with FREE WILL locate your phone with the needed detail.

I live in a townhouse/rowhouse and even in the basement it will put the location target right on top of my unit.

Damn. This just proves these yuppie Apple schmucks just can't hold their liquor!

Too funny. I guess these Apple follks sure love their booze. If they keep their stuff in their pocket like they should, it confuses me how people lose stuff like this so easily.

Yeah I never understood that. My phone, wallet, keys are never set down anywhere but in my house. Too much of a chance of forgetting it or some SOB taking off with it.

I would assume it puts the location target at last known location.

"Electronically traced the phone to a house"

Great! So if I get my phone stolen, my carriers don't give a fuck about me, they just try to sell me another phone, but if apple loses a phone, they are more then happy to help them

Fuck me, fuck this world, I hate the telecom giants with all my being

The carrier had nothing to do with that. The phone has an internet connection and GPS+wifi - Apple can track it themselves. There are a number of similar apps for iOS and Android for the general public, including remote wiping of the device.

Besides, all that stuff you see about cell triangulation to locate a phone to a small area on CSI isn't actually real.

Thank god the police were there to protect that massive corporation. If I lost a phone I would probably get fined if I tried to ask the police for help.

This is all too convenient for me..

Considering the amount of BS that went along with the last one that leaked you would think Apple would not even allow employee's out with prototype phones.

I wanna know the specs more than the leak bullshit.

They added another antenna and removed another button.. and the screen is slightly more visible at 0.5 more degrees then it was before... and it is shinier so you can use it as a signaling mirror if you get lost. :p

So, I kinda am thinking this is apples way of "unveiling" products nowadays. I mean, everyone was excited when the iPhone4 was "accidently left" at a bar last year, and now the possible iPhone5 or iPhone4GS or something stupid like that, being "accidently left" at another bar!

I was thinking the same thing. It might just be a stunt to create excitement over a new product.

Take it somewhere Take a bunch of pics and vids then drop it back at Cava22.
Wait a few weeks then post then in Hardforum. :)

Not like we care. But think of the ad revenue for Kyle!!!

I do believe Apple may have best PR team in the biz, right next to Nintendo (we dont have any wii's over a year after release to keep demand high).. "accidently" drop a phone in a place you know it will be stole... and watch the News (free advertising) roll in.. Pay a few security guys a $1 more than most non gun wearing ones do (so what. $8-10 an hour?) to run around a few bars and ask about Iphones.. may be the cheapest advertising Apple has ever done, instant national coverage, prety much any tech websitw till carry it.

Brilliant in my mind.. heck even the legal crap in the end will be all over the news... millions of $$ of free advertising for dropping the Iphone 5? (and from all i hear its the iphone 4.1, so little new its not even news worthy)..

I am dispointed we dont have the mass of reports on new features that goes along with these "lost phones"..

If the Apple team traced the phone to an apartment. Why didn't they bring more sophisticated equipment that would allow them to find any wireless emitting device in the apartment. Surely they could lock on a certain signal.

Oh please, these phones have all kinds of tracking software and hardware. If they wanted to track it down it's a cake walk.

Android.

Apple can go **** itself. If an Android prototype was stolen we would never hear about it. Google, Samsung, Motorola, HTC and LG would not care. This is just another arm of the Apple hype machine.

The hilarious thing is that in 3 months there will be a wide variety of iPhone 5 knockoffs from the Guandong province anyway. What's the big deal?

Apple didn't lose anything, it's their way of generating hype. Losing it the week that the Galaxy SII line was announced is no coincidence.

They're doing this on purpose to get on the news. One iPhone in exchange for being on every news program at prime time? Best advertising money ever spent.

Whoever finds it should work hard to remain anonymous. Apple apparently has Dial-A-SWAT-Team service.

Seeing as they provide tech to the group, and are on the steering committee for the task force, why are you surprised?

And they aren't SWAT.

I'm sure Gizmodo are keeping well clear of this crap.

Maybe Apple should rethink giving out iPhone prototypes, or hire someone new for PR and advertising, that doesn't like following up with legal action, once the phone is recovered?

I just don't like the idea of someone deliberately losing a prototype, and then destroying someones life for the sake of advertising.

Ah... The new face of marketing. Once was an accident, twice is part of the plan.

Besides, all that stuff you see about cell triangulation to locate a phone to a small area on CSI isn't actually real.

Uh... Phones have had GPS receivers in them for YEARS, you're a little behind the times.

I log into the Lookout website, click find my phone and it tells me which room of my apartment I left it in. Hell, I can tell if I left it on my desk or lost it in my couch.

Apple electronically traced the phone to a two-floor, single-family home in San Francisco's Bernal Heights neighborhood, according to the source.
When San Francisco police and Apple's investigators visited the house, they spoke with a man in his twenties who acknowledged being at Cava 22 on the night the device went missing. But he denied knowing anything about the phone. The man gave police permission to search the house, and they found nothing...

Hmm, maybe Apple is getting the GPS chip from Samsung. As anyone with one of the Galaxy S line knows, their GPS works for shit.

According to the CNET article, apple hadn't even filed a report yet and the cops are already all over it.
