U2711 = Heavy AG, Major "sparkle" effect, Text sucks
ACD = Crystal clear, no "sparkle", reflections in bright environments
SA850 = Crystal clear, no "sparkle", no "reflections", ships Spring/Summer 2011.
It's the new Samsung monitor called the SA 850 - the great Korean hope for people who want a real "high def" monitor. For me the glare on the ACD IS a deal breaker and I don't feel like spending a grand on a monitor that doesn't even have sharp text.
It has some potential drawbacks but nothing as bad as the terrible choice between INCREDIBLE glare (wholly crap you can't hardly see anything in those ACD monitors in the store - and it only gets 3.5 stars on Apples on website!) and a sparkle effect - which while I haven't seen is enough to make me think twice about a 1k monitor.
Of course those drawbacks include..
1) impossible to correct color/uniformity issues caused by the WLED lighting. (This is unlikely to bother me) but the guy who evaluated the SA550 found he couldn't achieve good settings as far as black levels and contrast go with corrected color. Also some users notice parts of the monitor are brighter/darker then others with WLED - but this is implementation specific. Apples monitor is WLED too and that seems uniform enough.
2) Scaler issues - again depends on implenentation but some scalers are really slow (Dell).
3) response time - the rated figures look find - 12ISO compared to 14 for the IPS monitors (that are not using RTC) so the realistic 5MS seems possible (a smidge better then the corrected 6 or 7 ms IPS panels). OTOH Samsung with the PVA panels has a nasty habit of creating panels that have good 'numbers' but are slow as hell IRL.
Don't get me wrong I'd have preferred a CCFL lit no scaler version of this monitor but beggars can't be choosers.
