Yes, it's a genuine issue because Apple fudged the math. I bought a 6-bit display for my desktop knowing full well what it was, and that's fine with me, but that manufacturer, and in fact all the manufacturers I saw (Hanns-G, Viewsonic, Samsung) were guilty of the same thing as Apple: they hid the fact that these were not 8 bit displays. Unless one dug through the specs that would remain hidden.
This is similar to the old monitor size problem where manufacturers were not quoting the visible screen area. Computers are all about technology so fer chrissakes give us the genuine specs or be punished.
