Apple Deceptive Practices

Get a life. If I can benefit from this, hell, I'm happy to collect from a class action. However, the fact of it is that this isn't a real lawsuit, its a couple of guys trying to start a class action. The last one I was involved in (Moto v710) was the stupidest waste of time ever. Took years and I got basically nothing.

I'm a teensy bit disappointed in the screen on my 15'' Macbook Pro but its not like better technology exists.

I should get a life? because I posted a news article? ok...

if theyre selling 6-bit panels, then yes a better technology does exist. 8-bit ;)

This just reaffirms my stance that the vast majority cannot discern the difference between 6bit and 8bit. Using VGA or DVI is also a classic example. Minute differences beyond the scope of the human eye; at least generally speaking, so why all the noise?

If Apple is caught selling 6bit as 8bit and even though I have no idea of the difference, I did pay for an 8bit so Stevie Boy, PAY UP SUCKA!!

There is no such thing as an 8-Bit laptop panel.

This is a total troll post. Get lost.

once again I didnt write the article. are you saying the author is a mac troll, too?

if no 8-bit laptop panel exists, maybe apple shouldnt have advertised it as such??

This is nothing new and doesn't surprise me. Apple does heavy marketing on their products and some of the claims are heavily exaggerated. 2.5x faster? 50% brighter? What do these statistics mean? They mean the product is somewhat better than the product it was replacing but it sounds a lot better to say 50% than marginally better.

Does that mean Apple makes bad products? No, some are better than others, but it just means Apple has a capable marketing department that likes to throw around certain statistics. They've made 25 commercials already highlighting their products on cable. It just means they're banking on their brand to sell things. Nothing more, nothing less. Always take Apple's PR spin with a grain of salt and nothing more.

A lot of manufacturers do this as well. Sony does this with their crappy xplode speaker line overhyping RMS and watts. It's one of the reasons I always take benchmarks with a grain of salt.

As I said, I like Apple products, but anyone who takes their marketing seriously is only buying the hype. It's a lot of spin, take moderate doses of reality accordingly.

I'm gonna go sue viewsonic too because they didn't tell me they use dithering to achieve millions of colors on my display  who's with me?

I've never seen any references to being an 8-bit screen

do i care? no

there are no 8-bit displays that can run OS x, and that's all i care about. That's what i pay for.

I think the issue of graininess is what is pissing these people off. My MBP had it and when I tried to talk to apple about it they refused to deal with it because it "was only a Windows" issue. The graininess also translated to the grays you see on [h] being very "spotty", as in it was not one solid color of gray.

correct. all apple says is "millions of colors," which, via dithering, is technically true.
Dithering does in no "technical" way increase the number of colours.

The Macbook's display is crap for colour-sensitive work; that's what I've been saying all along. Then again, ALL glossy displays are.

Under XP my screen looks horrible.

Is it worth collecting my like 8$ (while the lawyers walk away with millions?) No. It delays the iphone, it delays leopard and it delays the frigging 6G ipod by wasting apple's time and legal dollar.

Nowhere does it specify it's an 8 bit panel... if it did, then it would be a legitimate argument... But it doesn't.

My porn looks just as good on my Macbook screen as it does on all the other LCD's I have. And that's all that matters.

/thread.

I hope they get nailed for this (and yes I know the plaintiffs won't get anything but still...). When they advertise millions of colours, they should deliver. We're paying top buck for these and getting subpar crap (6 bit displays, GMA950, burned crotch, ...). All the old PowerBooks were 8 bit. The arrogance of Apple is astounding. Graphics designers are one of their main customers. They should stop smoking stuff at work if they thought a graphics designer wouldn't notice a 6 bit display.

It's hilarious how pro-apple dudes are screaming: "so what?", "what's the big deal?", "who cares?"

But then, if this news applied to Dell then OMG you suxor. Then they would ramble about how amazing apple is because mr. steve only sells the best.

Apple isn't more honest than any other company trying to steal everyone of those penny in your pocket. Hey, Jobs needs his marijuana...

Yes, that display is utter garbage. *65* degree viewing angle, 6 bit and 20 ms response time. Sounds like 1997 all over again. I really hope they get nailed *bad*.

6 bit is 16.2 million colors
8 bit is 16.7

They are producing millions of colors, so your case is false. It says NO where about 8 bit panels. This case is bunk.

WTF, absolutely not.

6-bit = 262144 colors. How? RGB each 6-bit so 2^6 = 64 Red/Green/Blue possibilities and mixed with each other = 64 * 64 * 64 = 262144.

Where do you get 16.2? Oh with dithering? Well, that's not real colors is it? It's not equivalent to 8-bit and for a company that makes you pay extra for their hardware you better get something good.

I have a 2002 Notebook that has better specs and looks better even today.

Here's a thought...

Is this an Apple issue, or an LCD manufacturer issue?

Most LCD's are actually 6-bit, not 8-bit. This has become an issue for Apple since they did a particularly bad job of hiding it on a lot of Macbook Pros.

If Apple loses, you'll see a lot more previously 8-bit displays are now sold as 6-bit.

Apple isn't the only one doing this, they're just low hanging fruit, to make a bad joke.

My beloved and well used PB is actually 6 bit (!). There is some banding on gradients but it doesn't look bad. I have seen the MBPs and they look worse. 3007WFP is 8 bit though and there's no banding at all.

well if apple had specific software to implement dithering to fake colors, then i think its an Apple issue, yes?

Not particularly...

Because I was doing some minor research last night, and about 90% of the LCD's I looked up, that were geared towards laptop use (lower power, smaller size) were only 256k colors.
(the only panels that were 8-bit were 20"+ panels... not sure i'd want a laptop that big...)
So the supply chain's supplying mainly 6 bit panels...

I'm interested to see what panels the other laptop suppliers are using.
Because then, if they are using a set of laptop panels that ARE 8-bit, in the wide range of sizes that OEM's offer, then it defintely becomes an Apple issue, because then they are choosing lower quality displays.

If not, then other OEM's are in on this "deceit" as well, OR the LCD suppliers are deceiving the OEM's and saying the panels "support millions of colors" but actually do this through dithering.

Of course Apple doesn't explicitly say their panels are 8-bit pixel width. They say "support for millions of colors."
I bet that in court, with Apple's lawyers, they will successfuly argue that dithering is covered under the "support for" statement.

So it's definitely misleading on Apple's part, but I fear that this is bigger than just Apple... and seriously in either case it needs to be fixed or stated how the displays are generating their color space.

(Also, I'm still trying to figure out how a panel supports 16.2m colors vs. 16.7m... 6bit = 256k. 8bit = 16m;... xBit = 16.2m? Is there some sort of bit robbing going on here? 7bit = 2m...)

Time to drop in my two pennies. I have a new 15" MBP. (I think I bought it April 4th) I've looked at all the color gradients that people have been throwing around on various forums, and I can honestly say that the screen in this machine has no problem with them - OSX or Windows. Am I the luckiest SOB on the planet, did they start using better displays, or are people just seeing spots from... something else?

http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=416

Through dithering 6 bit panels "manipulate" 16.2 million colors while 8 bit is 16.7 native. Basically if you have a TN panel (cheaper dell monitors, cheap monitors in general) you have a 6 bit panel. Is the difference noticeable? I guess so, if you're doing graphic intensive work. Can the average user really tell a difference? Not unless they look closely. Just my opinion though...

Ditto that. I'm a picky person, and I don't have any problems with my display.

Just think of graphics based items when you need to zoom in hundreds of %%% to get to detail to edit / manipulate......

Apple always claims to be this GFX king, or so the appleotz claim they are the best for it.. (funny, cause now is all intel PC hardware they use..) but ya,...

my macbook looks fine to me.

Ok that makes no sense...

How many graphics Pros sit on a laptop and work??

All the (even half-way serious) Gfx people I've ever met use really serious monitors.

And most of them shy away from LCD's *still*

More than you'd think. Photographers are big on laptops, for example. It's useful to be able to work on the field.

I'm using a 24" HP.

Eh, not really. I don't think we have a single CRT in the entire studio, in fact.
