I currently own an Apple 23" CD LCD and I was about to buy the 30" until I read the reviews of the Dell 24". I know, why would I buy a 24" as opposed to a 30". The price had me baffled until one of my friends bought the Dell and I was surprised to say the least.
The DELL is quite nice and I only use this system for games....any suggestions?

Get the Dell, more bang for the buck. You would save SO much cash and still get a great screen. 30" is just too big for a PC monitor IMO.

tbt101, asked in all kindness, do you say that as an owner of one?

Mine is not too large at all. You get used to it pretty quickly.

Seeker: It's a budget question only. If you can afford the 30" with at least one 7800GTX, there's no question the gaming experience is unparalelled. So, if the price doesn't matter then go for it. If it does, the 2405 will certainely make you happy. Get the best card you can buy though. I can't recommend the 7800 GTX highly enough.

I like the Apple but I have not been able to find a windows driver for XP. I cannot get to the native resolution.

Nope, I'm not an owner. I am not offended in the least though, I guess I just feel that 30" of screen is just a little too much. Not to say I wouldn't want one, heck, i would love to have one! It's just that having a 30" monitor I would want to sit a good 7 to 8 feet away from the thing, and I suppose in my room that wouldn't be possible. Anyone have some pics of their 30" setup?

It's not an issue of a windows driver, it's an issue of having a dual-link DVI transimitter on your video card. Specifically, if you don't have one you're screwed. The 7800 GTX does, and drives the monitor quite well.

Actually, two or three feet seems to be about best. Much further than that and you lose the value of the resolution because your eyes can't make out as much detail as the monitor is presenting.

I'd go the Apple. The Dell screens have a bit of lag associated with their input/image processing. The Apple's contrast and viewing angle seem incredible even when compared to the 23 and the 20. It is a much higher tech screen. If you can afford it, it is simply the best there is.

No you wouldn't, because then you wouldn't be able to read the text on it. You want to sit within 3 feet or you'd have to turn your text size way up, negating the size of the screen.

Higher tech... eh...
Looks: Apple: Awesome Dell: Pretty nice - Advantage: Apple
Size: Apple: 4Mpx Dell: 2.3Mpx - Advantage: Apple
Tech: Apple: S-IPS 16ms Dell: S-PVA 16ms - Advantage: Dell (Better tech for colours on the Dell)
Contrast: Apple: 400:1 Dell: 1000:1 - Advantage: Dell
Brightness: Apple: 270cd/m Dell: 500cd/m - Advantage: Dell (although higher brihtness is not necessarily always good)
Inputs: Apple: DVI Dell: DVI, VGA, Component, Composite, S-Video - Advantage: Dell
Hubs: Apple: USB2x2 + FWx2 Dell: USB2x4, 9-in-1 reader - Advantage: Tie (really depends what you want)

Scores: Apple: 2 (Looks+Size) Dell: 4 (Tech+Contrast+Brightness+Inputs) Tie: 1 (Hubs)
Please explain hos the Apple is "Higher Tech" than the Dell other than the size...
Oh, yeah, I'd jump on a 30" ACD in a second, if it wasn't so freaking expensive...

If you're going to be using it for games, then definitely go for the Dell 24". I use the 20.1" model and love it; getting a second one very soon. :D Anyway, 30" is hella expensive on Apple's side. I'd stay away from it if I were you. Also, chances are not many games support its native resolution, so you might be stuck running games in a window. But I'm not sure... so don't totally go by that. Want my quick opinion in one sentence? Get the 24", save a lot of money and use the extra cash on other things. :)

Wow, I am suprised! I didn't think you'd wanna be that close. Learn something new everyday I suppose! Anyone have any pics of their 30" setup? I would really like to see what one looks like.

Forget the 30" even if it was cheap the non-standard resolution isnt supported in games at all. The standard has allready been set at 1920x1200 and no games developer will support the 25xx resolution on a monitor which no one has, for cad work fine for gaming no.

Um, then how is it I'm playing a whole lot of games on mine at full resolution? You don't really know what you're talking about.

dude 25xx isnt a standard resolution and isnt guaranted to work. Where as 1920 is tried and proven and is the standard for current and upcoming games. Plus the fact that even with SLI 7800GTX's you wont get decent performance on the titles coming during the next few months. If your happy with 30 fps then go ahead.

How about number of gamers with dell 2405's VS Apple 30"?

I get 60 FPS in HL2 with all setting maxed with one 7800, let alone two. But when I get my second one in a few weeks, I'll let you know how it goes. Even if coming games are way more demanding, do you have any idea how good games look at four times the effective pixel density of 'normal' monitors, twice that of the 1920, even without antialiasing and so forth? I could turn off all the extras and still have a substantialy superior gaming experience. Hell, I'm playing these games at a higher res than commercial digital cinema projectors.

There are a few games that can't be made to support the full res. I've yet to find one that I care about, and upcoming games will be even more supportive of the native res.

So, your 'even if it was cheap, don't bother' sounds a lot like 'sour grapes' to me.

And about "How about number of gamers with dell 2405's VS Apple 30", well, who cares? How does that relate to the OPs question of which monitor to get? There are a lot more people with Toyotas than Ferraris, but which would you rather have?

I don't mean any offense, I just think you're making a lot of assumptions that aren't based on experience.

Exactly!

To add to this .. who the hell buys a screen and doesn't expect to use it for a lot longer than their current video card? The fact is that if you doze off for 5 minutes in this industry (and on [H] in particular ) a whole new generation of gear comes out. There WILL be video cards that will support 2560x1600 smoothly, I'm sure, and it isn't that far off..

for the person who wanted a pic... :)

Wow... I own the 2405 and I cant imagine having a 30" display in front of me.... wowow!

Someone should post a Dell 2405 vs Apple 23 and Apple 30 just for size comparison.
