Hi,

I'm a apple case modder and live in Hong Kong.

I'm very like apple case outlook, but i use windows OS for our work only.

Year 2004, I mod G4 Cube case to Centrino (PM1.8Ghz/2M) PC for our using.

Centrino G4 Cube PC config:
Intel Centrino 1.8Ghz/2M, iBase M890 MB, 512MB DDR333 RAM, 80GB/8M HDD,
DVD R/W Driver, internal 802b Wireless Lan.

This year, I mod G5 Case to PD830 (Pentium Duel Core 3.0Ghz) PC.

PD830 G5 PC config:
Intel PD830, Gigabyte GA-8I945GMF MB, 512MB DDR2 533Mhz RAM x 2, 200GB SATAII HDD, DVD R/W Driver, Ready to install X800XL PCI-E Display Card.

Please see some picture :)

Wow, my school teacher budd has one of those G4's, among other Macs, & is going to love seeing that mod.
Those cubes weren't very popular but I always thought they were cool.

Thanx for sharing your work laipanda.

Hi. I like that mill you are using. I'm jealous. I have a big one that is useless at the moment. I'd like to find a small one similar to that.

I'de like to see more pictures of how you mounted the motherboard and attached the back connectors.

very nice, and very clean.... it would be fun to take one into the apple store and say that its not booting right....

1) First, make a aluminium board and some screw-stand(see attach picture), mounting on upper / lower original G5 case screw mount.
2) I make one small PCB to mounting some connect I/O plug and use wire connect to MB.

Nice work, I've just finished my g4 cube conversion and they are great little machines. I did mine a little differently as I wanted to squeeze 2 hard discs and an optical drive in tho :)

Awesome job on both projects. I love your little milling machine (drool), I bet Gordy wants it too. Your work to keep the G5 case intact is commendable and shows real dedication. How did you get all the connectors to line up in the back? You could sell that power supply to all the modders of this case. Please post more pictures if you have them!

It looks like you actually soldered the connectors directly to the motherboard. Now THAT is some nice work. I would be showing that off if I were you. Outstanding job!

I post another DIY Silent Cube PC project, I make it give to my best friend ;)

Config:
P4-2.4GB CPU, Commell LV-670 MB,
512MB DDR333 RAM, 80GB HDD,
Internal 802.11b/g wireless lan, DVD R/W Drive.

i was thinking the same, nice lcd

Damn, that's some nice work! That has to be the nicest G5 mod I have ever seen. I really like that you kept all the ports and airflow intact from the original design.

Packard Bell pulled out of the US market several years ago (something like 8 years ago now?) They currently market in Europe.

i still have a packard bell 386, a 486SX, and a Cyrix M2 266 in my closet... lol everybody always thought those computers were POS....

and well... they were...

but incredible cubes, NJ, i wish i could find donor cases for mods as easily as you guys do

This is the first time I have looked at a 'mac' and gotten hard.

Awesome dude..

how did you take that pic, do you have 3 hands?

That G5 heat sink looks like it took some work.

damn nice work :)

Nice one man! That smooth G5 exterior just can't be beat!

A few questions though...

- how do PCI cards fit - there aren't any plugged into the PC motherboard in the pictures you have shown?
- did you make the PCB for the back connectors - or did you order this in, and solder it yourself? (how did you make a PCB!!?)
- does the 'standard' G5 chasis power supply connectors work with PC motherboard connectors, or not? Is this why you went down the custom PSU route?

I have a G5 case arriving in a matter of days and am trying to determine the effort to mod to PC!!!

Cheers,

The connector adapter you made is very sweet. Have you thought about selling those? You could sell a lot of them through this forum. Many G5 projects (including my own) have stalled because we want to do this, but don't know how. I wish your worklog had more images! You should do a seperate log for each project.

Great work!

Have you thought about making your little Milling machine into a CNC machine? It's easy.
