My argument is plenty convincing. You're just not listening. ;)
When you speak in a foreign language it is hard to understand.

Err, yeah, enough threadhijacking for the moment.
To pc users who game?

I'll take that setup over any PC in the world.

I like where Apple is going, I think they have a long term plan in motion, and I dont see Microsoft being able to do much of anything at the moment except tell everyone to wait.

I guess I don't really understand your statement. Are you referring to their OS releases or? Of course 10.x releases have their new features and stuff but when MS does a realease (except ME) there are quite signifigant differences in every area.

I've been a diehard windows guy since Windows 95...left Mac alone - then OSX came out. I've been stuck with Windows since, but have always been intrigued with OSX, the time has come I think to experiment with OSX. I got my iPod Photo 30gig 3 days after they were released, and I love it. Have been fiddling with my friend's Powerbook - am intrigued...so hopefully this weekend I'll be investing in a new iBook - if all goes well...Powermac this summer.

Even more sad - I'm considering proposing by iPod...is that bad?

I'm referring to the total computing package, the environment one uses to use the bleedin stuff in. Apple's environment and it's direction I see as more beneficial to ME, as opposed to Microsoft's direction.

That only applies to me. I dont claim everyone should think as I do, but I'll make my case foir what I think for myself.

As far as releases of software goes, Apple goes in major releases and minor upgrades.

10.0 ---> 10.1 -----> 10.2 ----->10.3 ------10.4

these are the Apple = of Microsoft moving from 95 to 98 to 2000 to XP.

then you have minor upgrades within those major releases:

10.3.2 ---->10.3.3 -----10.3.4, etc.

Those "features" in the major releases are actually major system improvements, not features. Spotlight is both a feature and a system wide major league overhaul of how searching is done, You can bet MS is going to copy it in Longhorn. I would bet my house on it.

The other thing is that Longhorn is not a shipping product, and wont be for at least a year and half. To see comparisions of Tiger to Longhorn on the web, referring to Longhorn in the present tense as if you could buy it NOW, really burns my nanny.

If you compare shipping OS to shipping OS, namely Tiger to WinXP, there's just no contest. And if you value your computing experience by how fast it plays a game without regard to anything else, then why are you using a computer anyway? Why not a console?

I'm not 22, I'm 42. I have a different set of values and priorities than I did 20 years ago, and Apple is addressing that better than MS is at the moment.

So thats what I mean by that.

I think it makes more sense to compare Longhorn with OSX 10.5, since 10.5 will probably be nearing completion by the time Longhorn comes out. People seem to forget that. :)

And OSX 10.5 will give us an idea about what features will be included in Windows in the year 2009.

'Lion' probably won't be out until 2007. It will be fully 64-bit (not that Tiger isn't, mind you, but Lion will have 64-bit Cocoa, Carbon, etc, APIs), and have a bunch of other improvements. You heard it here first. ;)

Actually, Tiger is NOT fully 64-bit. In fact, it's barely 64-bit. It allows applications to have more than 4GB of address space, but that's about it.

We'll know when we have a full 64-bit OS from Apple when it doesn't run on G4 or earlier chips.

Tiger is designed for 32 bit chips (which is why it still runs on G3 and G4's), but it will use 64-bit memory addressing if the hardware is capable.

I love mine. I use it mainly for surfing, email, day-to-day stuff. I only turn on my Athlon box when I need to use my studio (or get my UT2004 fix).

Tiger is, essentially, a fully 64-bit hybrid. It runs 64-bit software on 64-bit hardware, and it runs 32-bit software too. Apart from certain frameworks, it doesn't need to be "more" 64-bit than it already is.

Takes pipe, takes a hit. Yep. Hit me too!

Started with iPod --> G4 Powerbook ---> Shuffle --> Mac Mini (although this is my brother's, I converted him) --> Hopefully a G5 by summer.

Man, I started with an Apple //e, then down the road to a Classic //, and see where it lead. H*ll, I got my current job, because I learned to do Pagemaker 2 on my own over a long week-end. That was running on a 4mb SE with 20mb HD in 1988. Just ordered a dual 2ghz G5 for that position, and will be adding 2gb of ram and a second sata for backups. Will keep our current 20" studio crt for a year or two not to max out the budget. Its been a long way. ;-)

No.... in fact there's only one 64-bit library in Tiger.

See the ARS Technica review for more details on what 64-bit capabilities are in Tiger (vs. Panther).

http://arstechnica.com/reviews/os/macosx-10.4.ars/4

This doesn't mean it's a bad way of doing things, because it allows a migration (albeit a slow one) to full 64-bit support without suddenly breaking backwards compatibility.

Tiger can and does still use 32-bit device drivers for everything, for example... whereas with Windows XP x64 everything needs to be recompiled for 64-bit support, including all device drivers.

yeah, i'd love to see microsoft release a mainstream 64 bit OS, like make longhorn completely 64 bit with no consideration for the myriad of 32 bit apps and drivers everyone has. That would be a success, the majority of the computer market is the [h]ard limitless budget enthusiast group... wait... no. lmao.

whens your duallie get in esr?

im still computerless. hopefully apple fixes my powerbook today or tomorrow. :(

You're right on both counts.... they have released a mainstream 64 bit OS, and it has little or no consideration of existing 32 bit apps and device drivers.

While Tiger isn't really a full 64-bit OS (basically it's a 32-bit OS with some 64-bit extensions like I mentioned a few posts up), OS X does maintain full backward compatibility with device drivers and such. Apple is taking a more incremental approach which I think is a better strategy, although I don't really agree with it being marketed as a full 64-bit OS, because if that were true it would ONLY run on G5 and future processors.

What are the specs on your mini, cause I am looking to get hooked. I have been itching for a mini since they came out, I am so excited to be coming back to apple (my first computer ever was a Mac).

the mini ships to germany tomorrow, it included 1.42ghz g4, superdrive, 1gb ddr (+stock 256 dimm on the side), bluetooth, wifi, 4 port slim hub, 160GB usb 2.0 drive.

Powermac MAY be here tomorrow but most likely by friday
