Last week the military started blocking MySpace and YouTube on public PCs because they are time wasting, bandwidth hogs. This week, Apple decided that Uncle Sam had a good idea and now they are blocking MySpace too.

A statement from Apple Friday confirmed this. "Nearly 2 million people visit Apple stores every week," the statement read. "We want to provide everyone a chance to test-drive a Mac, so we are no longer offering access to MySpace in our stores." According to an Apple representative, the News Corp.-owned MySpace is the only site that has been blocked.

its not a bad thing really...

think about it... some 13 year old girl comes in and makes an account with "omghi2u im 23" and then some guy goes and rapes her, now they sue myspace AND the apple store for letting her get to myspace!

giving people free internet access is just asking to get sued now...

I think this is fair.
People are there to shop for a computer; not to check there myspace account.

MySpace and YouTube are the first two sites I block for any of my customers who do any type of content filtering. I see nothing wrong with this. If you want to suck of bandwidth, do it on a connect you paid for, not one that's provided for free.

It will be interesting to see how many of last week’s conspiracy theorist will come back out of the wood work and apply the same logic to this incident.

And…before someone goes off on a tangent….anyone that has been to a Mac store KNOWS there are a ton of these people who pull this crap, checking mail, MySpace, YouTube or just surfing the damn net while other people (paying customers) would like to demo the machines.

:D

Myspace the only site blocked? I'm on my way to an Apple store just to put up pr0n sites as the home pages on all the computers! Or change wallpapers. :D

i wish my university would block such sites from the various computer scattered in the halls. facebook is more popular here, which isnt such a soul sucker of a site, but still, they are there for checking email and other class related things, not for you god damn social life.

...at least they let you go on the internet...

Most places I have been to while looking for computers (back in the old days) wouldn't even let you use it at all.

it usually existed, you just had to get around their promo software.

Since when does using the Internet on a RETAIL computer have anything to do with BUYING a computer. I think that Apple Store is only bringing trouble upon themselves by even offering Internet access on DEMO machines. That would be similar to PCs offering Internet access at your local Best Buy. Does not make sense to me.

It's all cause the Replu.... err all those Democr..... hrrmmmmm..... JK

I don't think that anyone will attempt to argue "rights" or any bullcrap on this one. Unless the are arguing in favor or the retailers rights to add or remove access that they so choose.

conspiracy warning

Maybe Apple is coming out with their own take of a social networking site.

This is a direct attack by the government (using their puppet, Apple) on all 12 year old girls and paedophiles. Those are the only people using that site anyways, right?

Hell I wonder if it is to make the apple sales people stay off it as much as it is the "customers"

Shit when I was in retail the sales people used the internet all of the time. Maybe a customer has a question about software the sales person cant answer so they google it. Maybe to look up a quick review to show the customer that the product is good. Hell I know sales people that would compair are stuff to other stores. IE person says they are interested but want to see what best buy has or something. Instead of the sales person letting them leave the store and go there(where if they find the same deal they would buy it there instead of comming back) the sales person shows them what the other store is selling. It is used more then you think

you can use the computers in the store to check when that specific store is going to have a demo/seminar on how to use certain software, you can also reserve your time at the genius bar if you need to.

other than that, I don't see why they don't block EVERYTHING but their site, and maybe a select few others.

I'm behind apple 1000% on this. and not because i'm a rabid Apple fan (I am...), but because I'm a rabid anti-myspace/12-year-old-skanks/emo/idiot fan.....

Unrestricted internet in public places is stupid. At work they just released "StaplesHotspot" which is free unrestricted internet (cept porn is blocked).

Stupid. Although I was able to surf hard forums while I was working on computers :D

There is the possibility, of course, that they blocked MySpace just because it is UGLY, and Apple doesn't want ugly stuff being shown in their stores.

Link me a MySpace page that doesn't look ugly...

Why do so many people spend so much time on that crappy site? How shallow could you possibly get?

or maybe because there is no computer that exists that can load the 1000+ flash videos, music embeds, animated gifs that people stick all over their sites.

This isn't too bright by Apple. Pretty much their only customers who swear by their products are pre-teen pimple face losers who - shocker - use myspace. How can they evaluate that awesome new macbook if they can't test it out on the only thing they use a computer for?

Wouldn't be such a problem if the telco's would stop complaining about "their tubes" and give us what we already paid for.

Good for them, if i ran a computer store i would block all that shit too.

you ever been in an Apple store, all it is is people on the display computer on the internet.

people seem to think it is a free InetCafe

Apple Moca anyone

So dell / HP and that let them try out myspace before buying their computer?

this wont affect their sales at all.

myspace is only useful for publishing music demos. (as someone who records his own music)

and even then, it's so very ugly.

Tons... An example is the New York Apple stores, which are almost always crowded. Heck it gets so much traffic one of them open 24/7.

The only problem I see with that...is when I go to the mall, and I see the Apple store...it's always crowded also. But people who leave are leaving empty handed. Most of them are teens with no money of their own, so just because it's crowded doesn't mean it's selling anything.

Isn't that the same with a lot of other stores? :) Apple must be doing something right if their sales are going up.

Anyway I was suggesting It is crowded partly because people are using the free internet, at least for the New York stores. But on the other hand its advertisement for Apple.

I dont understand myspace addiction. I mean really, what is there to get addicted to? Reading all the "thx 4 da add" and the pointless and horrendous images being posted saying they are the hottest mami with the biggest booty? All the comments are the same and all of them are equally pointless. I cant imagine a worst way to waste time.

Its not that it has anything to do with selling the computers, it brings customers into the stores. People go in just to use the computers for the internet and any store salesperson will tell you the hardest part about making a sale is getting them into the store. Once they are in it is pretty easy.

Get them in the store with internet use on their Mac books, sell them $500 dollars worth of ipod accesories...BAM!

If myspace is the only site blocked I wonder how they are doing this or what they are using? Hopefully they won't run into the problem I have at my job where the kinds are constantly search for and trying to use website proxys, not a fully proxy server just a website designed to let you onto blocked sites.

And I'd go as far to say that it would be all super blindinly white so when you wake up in the morning it pierces your eyes. Oh, and all the hyperlinks would start with "i". There would be iGroups, iFriends, and iPictures.

I don't think they should block any reasonable websites. The whole point of having floor models is to see if the product is capable of doing what the buyer wants it to. For example, if a PC user spends a lot of time on Myspace, not letting them see if the site is compatible on a Mac. could be an incentive to stay PC.

that said, I'm pretty anti-myspace. Definately ban it for the employees
