Apple 30" = no for PCs?

Hey,

I'm in the market for a new display, and I was looking at only the best. Well, the Apple 30" caught my eye, but so did the fact that it only works with Apple 6800u in G4/G5 computers. Is Apple saying this just to like, get you to buy Apple? or is it possible to make this screen work on a PC with a regular 6800u?

of course you can use this display (if it ever gets available :-( ) with a PC. I´m planning to use it too. But you will have to use a video card with DualLink DVI. The only cards that support DualLink DVI (through a second DVI transmitter) are the workstation products of ATI and nVidia. Because the Apple Display has no scaler, nVidia is a better choice.
The following cards are possible:

- nVidia QuadroFX 2000/3000/4000 AGHP
- nVidia QuadroFX 3400 PCI-E
- ATI FireGL X3 AGP
- ATI FireGL V7100 PCI-E

At first I wanted to use the FireGL X3 but the QuadroFX 3400 for PCI-E seems to be the best choice for the Apple 30" HD display. It is (at least here in Germany) much cheaper than the QuadroFX 4000 although it is (apart from the interface) the same card.
Both are based on the 6800 Ultra, so games are no problem.

But I think we have some time left, I don´t really believe to see this display before the end of the year.

To your question: The 6800U has only Dual SingleLink DVI (only the first samples had DualLink), you can still see the place for the second TMDS transmitter backside. You need one of the above cards - if you want the performance of a 6800U, you will have to buy the QuadroFX 4000 or 3400.

make sure you post a review once you get the display. man, i just saw it today on apple.com and was completely blown away. my 21"CRT must look tiny next to that thing...

yep, 16ms and as for the plasma display: AFAIK the resolution is worse and the apple 30" display comes in for less than what you'd pay for a good plasma display.
 
Thanks for the reply. Didn't know they were 16 ms. Thats great, now I'm gonna have to keep an eye out for a deal on one.

Well then, why did Apple said you can run their 30" on their ver. of Ultra 6800?

The other thing is, is it possible for HP, Sony, etc. to make a 30" LCD and only expect people w/ a PCI E Quadro to run it? That's a very small market.

edit: what is this DLL version of the gforce they require here ? apple version of the regular gforce?
 
Hey, I thought you knew the answer. As we all know, 30" requires dual Link, so Apple ask Nvidia to make an OEM ver. of their 6800 Ultra just for the Apple 30.

But if an Ultra 6800 OEM Ver. can do dual link, then PC maker such as HP can ask Nvidia to do the same thing. AFter all, Apple IS USING AGP technology, the very same AGP that we use in PC.

As to market share, I disagree too. Do a poll in this forum and ask how many people wants a 30" LCD.

but this is [H]ardOcp...i mean only the 30" requires dual link cards, and that comes in at 3200$! not many ppl spend 3 grand on a display, so it is definitely a niche market IMHO. Designers, DPT, CAD/CAM to some extent and that'll be about if you ask me. heck, I'd go triple 2001FP for less...
maybe i'm wrong though, true, as ppl tend to invest more money into displays nowadays.

Except that those get ruined from static images (such as the HUD in a game, or the start bar in windows) and are designed for television.

And also good plasma screens do not have that great of a resolution...

Because it has a TMDS transmitter on the back side :) - all PC Versions of the 6800U only have SingleLink DVI.

=> I´ve read in a forum that the Leadtek 6800U could run the 30" display, but as you can see, this card also only has Dual-SingleLink DVI.
