Hey guys, I am building my old man a machine for his office that is going to last him at least 5-8 years. I am going to order him a G0 Q6600, 4GB DDR2-800, and a reasonable video card just so it is able to handle modest 3d applications for years to come.

Here comes the real question. The stock intel Heatsink is not an option. He will never, in 5+ years, dust the machine out, and it will be sitting either in a small confined area or in a drawer with minimal airflow. I want to know what a good heatsink, from your personal experience, will suffice for these conditions.

Factors:

Cooling (obviously)
Ability to cool with tons of dust in the case.
Size (can't be a board bender like some of the towers).
Under 40 Bucks.

Thanks for your input.

Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme, you will need to buy a 120mm fan also and I'd recommend a Sythe S-Flex or a Nexus (both quiet).

This heatsink may seem like overkill if you're not O/Cing but if you want the sysyem and chip to last years then heat is the enemy, the Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme laughs in infernos faces.

a used coolermaster aquagate would be suggestion. any air solution that wont get dusted for 5 years will meant hat you'll want something good enough to function passively if the fan fails due to dust or bearings seizing up. problem with this air coolers is that they will be one of those big tower coolers. new aquagates are $100, you might find a used one for around $40, but that might be a stretch too. overclocking better not be in the mix, with these requirements. the other option that you might consider is a 2U server HSF setup for S775, but it'd better be all copper, and heatpiped. good luck.

Thanks for the suggestions. I am still not going to put in a tower cooler or anything over 40-50 bucks. Aquagate is a no go, as the pump will probably fail well before a fan does (in my experience. I guess there might simply no alternative though...

i'd say if you're looking retail.. the only real option is a scythe ninja rev B... - they run about $37-44 ish dollars shipped.. and is probably your best bet in that budget.

you could probably find a used tuniq tower for about 40 shipped (which is a step up from the scythe ninja rev b).

probably won't find an ultra 120 extreme in your budget though..

in any case.. good luck on the search!
