Aperture Grille vs Shadow Mask

Normally, Aperture Grille displays offer a brighter, more saturated image which Shadow Mask technology trades off for better sharpness / focus. However, much can change depending upon the quality of the device you are buying. A shitty Shadow Mask monitor can have a fuzzy image, a shitty Aperture Grille display can be dim and faded.
 
Hmm... well I think I will go with a shadow mask because thats what I have used so far and I don't really see how brighter colors will be that much more beneficial to me where as sharper text and images are more important to me. So does anyone want to recomend a good 19in shadow mask. Thanks.

There are plenty of AG monitors that are sharper than most shadow masks. the .22 sony FD trinitron for one, the image is a crisp as can be. That said, a lot has to do with the quality of the monitor.
 
Watch it. My aperture grill model gives my shadow mask a run for its money in the sharpness department.

All the top end monitor with the highest refresh rates at the highest resolutions have aperture grills. The most powerful shadowmask monitor out today is the iiyama visionmaster pro 454, which can do 1920x1440@86Hz. (prove me wrong if you can) Its a 19 inch, god I wish they had a 21 inch.

Shadow masks are nice if youre picky about lines, but then again, I can see my shadow masks mask as well as my aperture grilles lines. I have good vision, it happens.

God I wish they had a unified display type. :mad:

Anyway, base your purchase on the res you wish to run and the refresh rate you want to run it at. After that, choose your preference of ap grill or shad mask. If you choose shad mask or ap grill first, you might eliminate the monitor that would make you happy at your preferred settings.
 
Nice comment on smily's. I, too, can see a shadow mask plain as day. As well as the AG lines. Really, you get a 'clearer' picture with the AG screens, and you'll find you get good technology for the money there as well. Just seems to me that beyond the Iiyama mentioned, shadow mask screens tend to be cheap, whereas you can find inexpensive AG screens from people like Viewsonic.

I cant really describe it. You know how you can see the grid on an lcd? I can see that too. Thats the closest I can come to explaining it.

The LCD "screen door" effect as its called. Basically the shadowmask has this same "screen door" effect, only its turned diagonally. Like diamonds instead of squares like in an LCD.

Ya I can also see the grid on some LCD's but you must be seeing the shadow mask on a monitor with fairly high dot pitch as I have done this also. You must have eagle eyes if you say you can see the shadow mask on a monitor with low dot pitch.
